Haikou, February 19th - (Reported by Chen Xin, Intern Liang Bing, Photography Report) In the days of cold rain before the Spring Festival, on the roadside of Haikou Fucheng, a newborn baby girl was abandoned and left to suffer from hunger and freezing, barely clinging to life. It was the police who responded to the alarm and rushed the baby to Hainan Maternal and Child Health Hospital for emergency rescue... This is the abandoned baby girl mentioned in our January 14th article "Heartless Parents Abandon Newborn Baby Girl on the Roadside." Today, we learned from Hainan Maternal and Child Health Hospital that after more than a month of relentless efforts by medical staff, the baby girl has been successfully saved and will be discharged in another one or two weeks. But who can give this unfortunate child a "home"?

The rescued baby girl lies peacefully at Hainan Maternal and Child Health Hospital, waiting for her new "home."

What happens after the baby is saved? Dean Xiang Wei of Hainan Maternal and Child Health Hospital expressed that the child's plight is heart-wrenching, and it is the hospital's responsibility without hesitation to save lives. However, the hospital also finds itself in an awkward position, fearing that such incidents might lead some unscrupulous parents to misinterpret and abandon their sick children easily. The hospital is not a welfare institution. After the baby is saved, if no one adopts her, she will be sent to the welfare institute. We hope that all sectors of society can pay attention to such situations and show some care for similar cases.

"When admitted, the baby girl was an extremely low-weight newborn with lung bleeding, weak breathing maintained by a ventilator, and feeding difficulties; the situation was very grim," Dr. Yang Ling from the Neonatal Department of Hainan Maternal and Child Health Hospital told reporters. The baby girl had to overcome three major hurdles: infection control, nutrition support, and respiratory management, along with potential complications like jaundice.

"The little one's vitality is incredibly strong. Generally speaking, it's already quite difficult to save someone in such a severe condition as hers, but now not only has she survived, but her physical condition is also very good," Dr. Yang Ling said comfortingly. The little one can now suckle milk herself and doesn't need intravenous fluids anymore. Based on her current health status and development, the baby has basically returned to normal, as healthy and adorable as other newborns. However, she still needs to stay in the incubator for another two to three weeks, and once her weight reaches 1.8 kilograms or 2 kilograms, she can be discharged.

On February 19th, when the reporter visited the neonatal ward of Hainan Maternal and Child Health Hospital, the little one was sleeping peacefully in the incubator, seemingly sensing visitors and lazily moving her body. A red envelope was pinned beside the incubator, a "lucky money" gift given by the hospital to each child during the Spring Festival. Compared to the last time the reporter saw her, the little one's condition had improved significantly, growing from 1.2 pounds to 2.84 pounds.

News Flashback: A Newborn Baby Girl Left on the Roadside in Cold Weather

On January 11th, a newborn baby girl weighing only 1.2 pounds was found lying in the grass by the roadside in Haikou Fucheng, critically ill. Local police officers brought the baby girl first to Qiongshan People's Hospital for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of her condition, the Qiongshan 120 service transferred her to Hainan Maternal and Child Health Hospital for further rescue. When admitted, the baby was wrapped in a green towel blanket with a set of new clothes inside.

"The little one has very bright eyes, constantly turning around, so adorable," Dr. Yang Ling said excitedly. Some people may lack compassion, but doctors cannot remain indifferent. Although the baby's parents have never shown up, over the past month, the medical staff have treated the little one as their own child, taking meticulous care of her with full responsibility. Every doctor and nurse in the department has become her "parents." Currently, the baby's medical expenses have amounted to nearly 60,000 yuan. The cost of the "premature milk" and daily necessities has been voluntarily borne by the hospital staff, amounting to several thousand yuan so far.
