Among these statistics, China has become the country with the fastest growth in app downloads, with an increase of as high as 298% in 2011, indicating that the domestic 3G market is about to reach a new tipping point.
In recent years, the number of mobile internet users in China has rapidly expanded, reaching 356 million in 2011, an increase of 17.5% year-on-year. With the widespread use of smartphones and other mobile terminals, mobile applications have also experienced explosive growth. The trend of mobile app downloads and demand for new apps is unstoppable, and last year China quickly became the world's second-largest mobile app market.
However, reporters also learned that although mobile apps have such a large user base and demand, the profit situation for domestic mobile app developers is quite awkward. According to data from iResearch Consulting Group, by the end of November last year, only 13.7% of Chinese mobile app developers were profitable, 21.8% broke even, and a staggering 64.5% were at a loss. Developers are at a loss regarding monetization models and promotion channels for their apps.
Chen Liming, a relevant official from China Software Information Network, believes that the significant increase in app download volumes also indicates that the new model of "[terminal providing the platform, applications taking center stage]" in the domestic 3G market is becoming mainstream. The era when companies relied solely on terminals to win has passed, and all mobile phone manufacturers will focus their efforts on applications this year. The trend of hardware and software integration will continue to emerge, leading the domestic 3G market into a new turning point.
