[Reprint] Many people think that the launch of Symbian^3 means the end of S60v5. This is a completely irresponsible statement! (This is also what I want to say.)
First, I don’t know if those who say this have actually looked into which aspects Symbian^3 has upgraded. Symbian^3 is a kernel-optimized system, similar to the difference between Windows XP and Windows 7, not as drastically different as Linux and Windows.
Second, the UI of Symbian^3 continues the legacy of S60v5. The N8 uses the S60v5.2 interface. People familiar with software know that V5.X represents a series, with almost 99% compatibility. The launch of Symbian^3 will encourage more software developers to see the strong vitality of Symbian, meaning software developed for Symbian^3 can still be used on S60v5. Thus, the amount of software available for S60v5 will increase rather than decrease.
Third, there are differences between Symbian^3 and S60v5. Symbian^3 natively integrates the QT platform, allowing for more stunning desktop widgets and page-switching effects. These software changes also place higher hardware requirements. Therefore, Nokia, being frugal, had no choice but to select multi-core processors and larger RAM/ROM to meet the demands of Symbian^3. This raises a new issue: while the software may be compatible, older S60v5 devices might struggle with performance issues. At first glance, it seems like Nokia has abandoned V5, but consider this: isn't this true for computers as well? More advanced technology continues to emerge, and software requires increasingly powerful hardware. Since this is the case for everyone, we have no reason to complain about Symbian's upgrade to a new system.
Fourth, after the release of Symbian^3, new S60v5 phones will still be launched. Symbian^3 places high hardware demands, whereas most users are price-sensitive. Ultimately, the market will still be dominated by phones in the $500-$2000 range. Nokia won't do unprofitable business, and currently, the best cost-effective platform remains Symbian S60v5. There’s no need to worry that S60v5 will become outdated. Within at least two years, S60v5 won't reach the end of its lifecycle! Consider how long S60v2 lasted? Nokia's market share in China hasn't decreased; it has even increased significantly, fully proving the excellence of the Symbian platform! Everyone should know that the C6-00 model is about to be launched, and it runs on the S60v5 system!
Fifth, Symbian^3 is not the decline of Symbian, but its rebirth! Have you watched the video of Symbian^3 yet? Many might say: "It doesn't seem very innovative." Indeed, the user interface looks unchanged. But did you know? Due to improved hardware performance and enhanced memory management mechanisms, Symbian^3 allows more programs to run simultaneously. Hardware support for 3D makes gaming effects more stunning. A key reason why mobile phones couldn't replace MP4 players in the past was the scarcity of smooth video playback resources. Now, the minimum hardware requirement for Symbian^3 can smoothly play 720P HD videos, eliminating worries about video resources. We can completely use third-party UIs to replace the system's native UI. Those unfamiliar can check out SPB SHELL and the S60v5 UI developed by 3G Gate. The gorgeous interface and smooth performance will surely attract users from other systems. Quantity leads to quality; the significant improvement in the performance of the Symbian^3 system will attract more users, and an increase in users will promote more application developers, whose applications will attract more users... forming a virtuous cycle.
From the above points, we can see that Symbian^3 marks the beginning of Symbian's second era of brilliance. Let's look forward to Nokia doing better!
What I actually want to say is: many people online who use smartphones first encountered Nokia's S60 phone and learned how to use smart devices. After becoming familiar with smartphones, they naturally hear about other systems and assume Symbian is inadequate because unfamiliar landscapes always seem beautiful. This is understandable. However, once you've used over 30 phones, you'll find that after going around in circles, S60's stability, audiovisual experience, speed, and standby time remain the best smartphone system. If you don't believe me, take this as evidence. (I think this sentence is excellent!!)
