I have been playing badminton on and off for five years. I took a semester of badminton class in college, which was like an introduction to the sport. I've used rackets ranging from SZ rackets priced at over 100 to Wilson and YY. My latest insights about playing badminton are as follows:
(1) Footwork is more important than anything else, even more so than smash shots or net control techniques; you don't necessarily have to hit the shuttlecock at its highest point - as long as your footwork is in place, you can return any shot and ensure the quality of your return.
(2) Make changes! Your shot selection must vary when playing badminton! No matter how powerful your smashes are or how delicate your net play is, if your opponent becomes familiar with your shot patterns, you will easily shift from being in control to being controlled. Always remind yourself of this during the game, especially when you're losing consecutive points - change...change!
(3) If the skill levels between players are equal and you want to win, you must first get yourself excited. When you're excited, your reaction time is faster and your speed increases! Remind yourself before stepping onto the court - get excited...excited! Ideally, you should be as hyped up as if you were on drugs, haha.
(4) You must always be confident in yourself: when you're confident, your footwork and stroke actions become more fluid and graceful. Especially during defense, always remind yourself to stay confident!
(5) If you're playing doubles, be forgiving of your partner's mistakes; we're all human, and everyone makes mistakes, right?
(6) The subconscious mindset you should have while playing badminton: don't always aim to finish off your opponent with one shot; always be prepared for the next shot to come. (I've been making this mistake recently.)
