Xu Beihong's "Standing Horse" to be Auctioned in Beijing; Experts Estimate Value Over 4.5 Million
The renowned late Chinese painter Xu Beihong’s work, "Standing Horse," will be auctioned in Beijing. Experts estimate the auction price to range between 4.5 million and 5.5 million RMB. The proceeds from the auction will be used to sponsor impoverished college students in Beijing to complete their education. The advocate for this charity special auction titled "Greatest Joy Lies in Doing Good, Storing Talents for the Country" is Liao Jingwen, the widow of Xu Beihong. At a press conference held on the 16th, she said: "Today is the most unforgettable day of my life. My entire life has been devoted to pursuing the unfinished cause of Xu Beihong. When I faced the greatest difficulties, the government gave me the most care, helping me out of adversity. Today, I want to do everything in my power to help more underprivileged college students further their education. This is my way of giving back to society."
As early as 1953, when Xu Beihong passed away, Liao Jingwen had already donated 1,253 original works by Xu Beihong and over 1,100 collected artworks to the state.
According to the market value estimation conducted jointly by Forbes Chinese edition and Art Network, the donation efforts of the group of Chinese artists have deeply impressed people. The donations of just the top five artists have reached 4.5 billion yuan. Among these, the market value estimation of the 1,253 works donated by Liao Jingwen amounts to 2.159 billion RMB, placing her at the top of the Forbes China Artists’ Public Welfare and Charity List.
At the age of 88, Liao Jingwen has sponsored many financially disadvantaged university students to complete their studies. Upon learning about the difficulties faced by impoverished students studying in Beijing, Liao Jingwen decided to donate a "Standing Horse" created by Xu Beihong in 1936.
Xu Qingping, the son of Liao Jingwen and Dean of the Xu Beihong Art Academy at Renmin University of China, introduced that this event received strong support from Xu Beihong's disciples and well-known painters. A total of 75 famous painters donated more than 100 calligraphy and painting works, including Pan Gongkai's ink painting "Sparse Rain Blurring Island," Han Meilin's "Monkey," Hou Yimin's "Grandfather Feeding Monkeys," and three works of the Great Wall by Shi Chengfeng, known as the "Great Wall Painter."
"All the more than one hundred works currently collected are masterpieces created by the most famous contemporary painters," said Xu Qingping. He stated that these works are the highest quality paintings he has seen in charitable auctions, with some oil painters donating a large number of oil paintings, which is truly commendable and expresses their attention to the charitable cause.
According to Wu Zhen, Secretary General of the Liao Jingwen Foundation Committee of the Chinese Red Cross Society, the charity auction will take place on September 26, and all proceeds will be donated to the Liao Jingwen Fund of the Chinese Red Cross Foundation. The funds will be strictly managed according to the financial management methods of the Chinese Red Cross Foundation and used to sponsor impoverished college students in Beijing to successfully complete their studies.
