Chutian Metropolis Daily - Have you heard of an "Leave Application Office" specifically for handling student leave procedures? Yesterday, I saw such a unique office at Wuhan Finance School.
This office is located on the first floor of one of the school's office buildings with a sign hanging on the door that reads "Leave Application Office." Within its ten-plus square meter space, there is a computer, two desks, and a sofa.
Teacher Zhang Xiaohui, who was on duty, introduced that students must bring their school badges to the "Leave Application Office" to collect a leave application form. They are required to fill in the reason for leave, departure time, parent’s name, and telephone number. After the homeroom teacher calls the parents and signs off on it, the form is finally submitted to the "Leave Application Office." The on-duty teacher verifies this information with the homeroom teacher before stamping and approving the leave. Students then exit the campus with the approved form and return to the office upon re-entry to cancel the leave. If they fail to cancel the leave promptly, the on-duty teacher will inform the homeroom teacher.
When reviewing the records, I found that more than ten students had applied for leave yesterday, mostly citing reasons such as going home to fetch mosquito nets, going out shopping, or returning home to retrieve living expenses.
Why was this office established? Dean Dun Yinlu of the Student Affairs Department explained that previously, leave applications were managed by multiple departments including the Student Affairs Office, Security Department, and homeroom teachers. Some students would forge signatures from their homeroom teachers on the leave forms to deceive the gatekeepers and leave the campus, causing certain safety hazards. In October last year, the school established the "Leave Application Office," which is now managed by two full-time teachers. The leave policy primarily targets boarding students, with approximately 1500 boarding students currently enrolled at the school.
The school has also developed a "Leave Application Software," where on-duty teachers input leave and cancellation information into the computer. At the end of the day, the daily leave and cancellation information is transmitted to the dormitory duty computer for verification by the dormitory management staff, enabling 24-hour tracking of the students.
Dean Dun Yinlu told reporters: "Previously, about seventy to eighty students would apply for leave every day. Since the establishment of this office, the number of students applying for leave has been reduced by nearly half, with less than one person per class on average."
I randomly interviewed two students, who said that the current leave application process is more troublesome than before, but the school is doing it for the benefit of the students, so it's not bad. Most interviewed parents expressed support. Ms. Wan said: "The strict management by the school gives the parents peace of mind."
Professor Fan Xianzuo from the Faculty of Education at Central China Normal University believed that from the perspective of improving management and being responsible for the safety of students, the school's approach is commendable. He also pointed out that children's self-discipline should be cultivated from a young age. Whether it is elementary school, middle school, or families, guidance in this area must be strengthened, which will be more beneficial for the growth of the children.
