Introduction:
The story of Zhang Ailing's eponymous original novel takes place in Shanghai during WWII, where various forces are intertwined. A female spy disguised as a student gets close to Mr. Yee, another side's spy's wife, but ends up falling in love with Mr. Yee. Although it is a spy-themed novel, it focuses mainly on their complicated and tangled love affair. Just by looking at Mr. Yee's inner monologue in the novel, one can understand the tone of the novel: "He was not optimistic about the war situation. But did he know what his future held? To gain a soulmate, he would die without regrets. He felt her shadow would forever accompany him, comfort him. Even though she hated him, her final feelings for him were so intense that they transcended any specific emotion; there was just feeling. They had a primal relationship of hunter and prey, tiger andä¼¥, the ultimate possession. Only then was she truly his person in life, and his ghost in death."
