What would the Earth be like without humans? Writer Alan Weisman once wrote a best-selling book called "The World Without Us," which depicted such a scenario and was later made into a documentary. Initially, 20th Century Fox planned to adapt this book into a large-scale disaster film with a cautionary message for the big screen.
In his book, Alan Weisman imagined that if humanity suddenly disappeared one day, what changes would occur to the Earth's environment and other living beings: First, human artifacts would gradually be destroyed by the forces of nature; second, animals that previously lived in the shadow of humans would make a great comeback, reclaiming the territories that were once taken over by humans...
These descriptions by the author are not baseless. In 2010, during the Tour de France, after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the former Soviet Union had a nuclear leak, its residents were forced to relocate en masse, turning the entire city into a "ghost town." Twenty years later, when people returned there, they found that in just a few decades, nature had already eroded human-made structures beyond recognition.
Fox does not intend to produce another documentary because the American History Channel (History Channel) already produced one last year called "Life After People." They hope to turn it into a science fiction story film and depict the great disaster that causes the sudden disappearance of all humanity. Currently, Mark Protosevich has begun writing the screenplay for the film, and Francis Lawrence, the director of "I Am Legend," will direct this movie, as seen in the fourth season of "Ugly Betty."
