AOL's online storage service xDrive

Many large websites offer a variety of free services, and AOL seems to be unable to resist the trend as well, opening up free registration for its xDrive service. This gives us another choice beyond box.net, Google Pages, Xuite, etc.

The registration process for xDrive is similar to that of most websites, also being quite convenient and simple. After registration, you can immediately access your storage management interface, which resembles Windows Explorer somewhat. In the upper left corner, there's an "upload" button that links to the file upload page. For file management, one of its highlights is that you can set detailed sharing options for each of your files (although its sharing method does not include anonymous access; you need to manually add friends' emails, which is somewhat inconvenient). The upload categories include Documents, Photos, Videos, Music, and Bookmarks, almost covering all currently popular online storage and sharing services. The 5GB capacity makes uploading less restrictive. However, possibly due to slower domestic connections, I found the speed much slower than box.net and Google Pages — very slow indeed. Of course, it cannot compare with domestic servers (hopefully, we will soon see true Web 2.0 era network disk services in China). Still, for sharing smaller files, it should have its place.
