Our news (Wang Peilian) - Just last weekend, Guan Erjia and her classmates participated in volunteer services at a nearby migrant workers' children elementary school near their campus. On Monday, while heading to lunch, they stopped by the bulletin board to look for more volunteer opportunities. Guan Erjia is an undergraduate student from the 2010 cohort of Jilin University's School of Administration. The reason she is so eager to find more volunteering opportunities is because the university has recently introduced new regulations regarding volunteer services.
Jilin University has recently announced that starting with the 2010 undergraduate cohort, "volunteer service" will officially be included in the undergraduate credit system. All newly enrolled undergraduates will simultaneously register as "Jilin University Sunshine Volunteers" and receive a volunteer ID card.
According to the "Jilin University Volunteer Service Evaluation Details for Incorporation into the Undergraduate Curriculum System," the undergraduate volunteer service evaluation system consists of basic requirements and optional selections. Basic requirements are mandatory course obligations for students, while optional selections can be chosen based on actual conditions and circumstances. The final score is obtained by adding the scores from the basic requirements and optional selections, with a maximum total of 100 points.
Upon learning about the new measures for volunteer services, Guan Erjia and her classmates were very pleased. In the past, the "Situation and Policy" course was limited to classroom teaching. At the beginning of this academic year, Jilin University adjusted the content of the "Situation and Policy" course across the entire university. Volunteer services will now become the practical teaching component of this course, accounting for 40% of the total grade. This course spans two years, with evaluations for classroom teaching and extracurricular practice handled separately by the university's academic affairs office and each college's Youth League Committee.
The new initiative also requires that students participate in various levels of volunteer activities for no less than 60 hours per academic year. They must also participate in municipal or higher-level organized volunteer services at least twice. Additionally, students should have long-term volunteer service locations and beneficiaries, conducting volunteer services at least three times per month.
Recently, the Youth League Committee of Jilin University also issued regulations such as the "Implementation Measures for Deepening Volunteer Services at Jilin University" and will regularly allocate a fixed amount of volunteer service special funds to ensure students can smoothly carry out volunteer activities.
