On the morning of August 21st, a news story about a female employee of Baidu who resisted a security guard's attempted rape and was subsequently killed, was reprinted by major websites. The incident occurred in the early hours of February 18th, 2006, when a female employee of Baidu, having missed her company shuttle bus, decided to stay overnight in the meeting room on the 18th floor of Yinkeda Building. A security guard then had ill intentions towards her. After failing to carry out the rape, he murdered the female employee.

This was originally a tragedy; when media outlets report on such events, they mostly condemn the perpetrator from a humanistic perspective and express sympathy for the victim. However, Sohu reported on this event by exclusively creating a series of photo collections that extensively sensationalized the entire process and details of how the security guard committed the crime. This inevitably raises questions about Sohu's journalistic integrity and sense of social responsibility.

Previously, Baidu had engaged in a war of words with Sohu over a layoff issue (see "Baidu vs Sohu: Another Episode of Unholy Competition?"), but this does not seem to justify Sohu's manner of reporting on this particular event. Yet, the reality is that Sohu not only did it, but they did it shamelessly.
