Once again, it's National Day. The hustle and bustle of life, accelerated by the seven-day holiday's leisure time, has almost made me forget the sacred meaning of National Day itself. Suddenly, when it comes to mind, I can't help but feel a mixture of joy and loss. Fortunately, the happiness of celebrating National Day and the love for our country still exist. Therefore, I write this article to offer my blessings on the 61st birthday of our motherland!
Speaking of articles, if I were to write a long piece singing praises of our country's strength and greatness, wishing for its prosperity and development, I imagine many friends would get goosebumps from how sappy it might sound, ha ha. In fact, there is no need for me to mechanically chant slogans about the greatness of our country or the changes over 61 years; the transformation in the details of ordinary people's lives is enough to showcase China's great changes over these 61 years. Let's narrow the scope to our family and look at the great changes in our family's New Year's Eve dinner over these 61 years.
The most important festival for Chinese people! A festival that is valued deep down even in the worst of circumstances — Spring Festival! At this sacred moment of the turn between the old and new year, a sumptuous New Year's Eve dinner is both a consolation for the hard work of the past year and a nutrient for the efforts of the coming year. It cannot be taken lightly. So, people prepare their New Year's Eve dinners as richly as possible.
Sixty-one years ago, my grandfather and grandmother were still young, but with many children in the house, despite their hard work, they still couldn't eat their fill or stay warm, let alone talk about nutritional balance or seasonal equilibrium. So, the richest New Year's Eve dinner back then was the dumplings my grandmother made with half a catty of white flour mixed with buckwheat flour and filled with cabbage leaves. According to my grandmother's description, the whole family gathered around these dumplings, eating them with relish! After finishing, they would have a bowl of dumpling soup, and all the hunger and cold of the year seemed to disappear, bringing immense happiness! (The poverty of those times was heart-wrenching, but looking back now, it seems to carry a hint of pure sweetness.)
By the 1970s, the family's economic situation had slightly improved, so the cabbage-filled dumplings were replaced with dumplings filled with sweet potatoes and a little minced meat, wrapped in white flour, boiled hot, and dipped in vinegar with pickled vegetables... absolutely satisfying!
After the reform and opening-up, the economy developed, and our generation was born into this good era. Eating dumplings on New Year's Eve was a certainty, but various other delicious dishes also graced the table. When we were young, we could eat meat, but not every day. However, during the Spring Festival, a rich table full of chicken, pork, fish, and meat was prepared. We greedy kids ate continuously for several days, grabbing and devouring, competing and snatching, ahem, please note, we weren't hungry, but being together with siblings of the same age, even after being full, food snatched from others' mouths seemed especially delicious, leading to a food-grabbing battle. Anyway, being young, we didn't care about appearances, and everyone ended up stuffed. But, it was really joyful.
At the end of the 20th century, our group of siblings had grown up, and the quality of the New Year's Eve dinner kept pace with us, growing up too. Eating meat? Hmm~ Too greasy; eating dumplings? What kind of filling should we make? Beef? Pork? Lamb? Or three fresh ingredients? Radish? Greens? Ah! Picking and choosing, we decided to make all kinds, store them in the fridge, and just take out what we wanted to cook. There were fewer big fish and meats in the New Year's Eve dinner, more exotic fruits and vegetables, and the elders proudly said, following TV lingo, "This is called supplementing vitamins for health!" Hahaha~ Amid laughter and joy, a happy new year began...
Time has passed through laughter, sorrow, hardship, and fulfillment to reach the present. The New Year's Eve dinner is no longer just described as sumptuous. It's rumored that many city folks go out to eat, and urban hotels are bustling with customers. However, our family still celebrates at home, feeling that this day must be spent at home, sigh! How rustic! The variety of the New Year's Eve dinner hasn't increased but decreased because everyday meals are already quite good. The old habit of overeating and drinking during the New Year is no longer suitable. Before the New Year, buy the desired fruits, vegetables, meat, and eggs, prepare a few favorite dishes, make some delicious dumplings, and everyone enjoys a hearty meal together amidst laughter and joy, bidding farewell to a happy year and welcoming an even happier one. Hehehe…
Our family's New Year's Eve dinner has gone through sixty years, carrying our accumulation and witnessing our growth and change. Among the thousands of families in our country, each family's New Year's Eve dinner is a testament to the prosperity and growth of their family over these sixty years, and our growth and development are also witnesses to the strength and prosperity of our country's development!
