Xinhua News Agency, Wuhan (reporter Wang Zhen) - Last night, a reader reported to our newspaper that on the morning of the previous day, a family member of a patient beat a female doctor at Hubei Xinhua Hospital. The female doctor was then residing in their hospital.

Yesterday morning, I met Dr. Ma Jiejun, the deputy director of the emergency department who had been beaten, in her ward. Speaking about the events of the previous morning, she could not help but shed tears. She said that around 9 AM, several people brought an elderly woman to the emergency room and immediately asked her for an admission certificate for the endocrinology department. Dr. Ma explained to the elderly woman that they first needed to consult with an endocrinologist, but the elderly woman insisted on her request. Dr. Ma asked where the elderly woman felt discomfort. After listening to her description, Dr. Ma determined it was not an endocrine issue and suggested they consult the triage desk.

One of the elderly woman's sons became impatient: "Why are you so talkative? Watch out or I'll hit you." Dr. Ma quickly contacted the endocrinology department, asking them to send a doctor down to treat the elderly woman. However, the man thought she was shirking responsibility. At this moment, an ambulance arrived with a critical patient. Before Dr. Ma could leave to assist, the man blocked her path and started cursing. When Dr. Ma retorted, the man spat in her face. Instinctively, she raised her hand to defend herself. The large man then shoved her hard, causing her to fall and hit the corner of a table, resulting in a head injury.

The elderly woman was also hospitalized there, and I subsequently interviewed her family members in her ward. They denied hitting Dr. Ma, claiming "She fell by herself." However, two eyewitness patients provided testimony to the Tangjiadun police station officers, stating that the man’s behavior was unacceptable. Currently, the police have launched an investigation into the matter.
