Domain Name启示录: How to Choose a Good Domain Name

According to foreign media reports, recently the overseas market has sorted out the top ten domain names that are easiest to misspell. All ten of the most frequently mistyped websites are well-known sites, with Google, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube all appearing on the list, while Facebook tops the chart.

According to media reports, Facebook.com, as a mainstream social networking site, has achieved excellent results in its social model within the industry and has quickly grown and developed in the overseas social networking field, gaining a large user base. Reports indicate that the proportion of incorrectly inputted domains for Facebook.com is as high as 9%, primarily due to users accidentally adding an extra "o," resulting in typing Faceboook.com instead.

Other domain name errors mostly occur because of either adding or omitting letters. The search engine google.com is often mistakenly typed as googe.com or goole.com, with an error rate of 3.3%. The reason why this rate is lower than that of Facebook.com is that most users access Google simply by using the search bar or directly typing queries into the address bar, without needing to type google.com into the address bar. Meanwhile, youtube.com can be mistakenly entered as youttube.com or yutube.com, with the same error rate of 3.3%.

An internet domain name is the URL entered into the browser's address bar when visiting a website, equivalent to the website's address on the global Internet. The first domain name I memorized was Baidu.com, where you can almost find all the information you want through the search engine. However, sometimes when browsing some beautifully designed small sites, if you misremember or forget the domain name, it becomes impossible to revisit them, which can be quite regretful. There is no doubt that search engines are indeed convenient tools, but they can also make it difficult to find certain websites. The best method is undoubtedly to have a domain name that is both easy to remember and not easily misspelled.

A good domain name must possess the characteristics of being concise, clear, memorable, and profound in meaning. Currently, most domestic websites use their brand names, trademarks, or product names as their domain names, such as Baidu’s Baidu.com, Sina's sina.com, and Tencent's qq.com. These domain names are both easy to remember and help establish brand identity.

Some people argue that with the development of the internet, most good domain names have already been registered, so where can one still find good ones? However, the reality isn't as bad as imagined. With careful thought, it's certainly possible to come up with a good domain name. A well-known domestic e-commerce expert at www.nuo.cn has provided some suggestions for reference.

Firstly, determine whether your website will target an international or domestic audience. For international websites, it's best to use English words as part of the domain name. Corporate websites could combine the company name with the industry name, such as name+food for those in the catering industry. For other already registered English words, simple additions like prepositions (on/in/at) can be used. Alternatively, combining with numbers is another option. For domestically oriented enterprises, pinyin-based domain names are recommended, as they align more closely with Chinese habits. One reason I prefer Baidu.com is because I struggle to remember google's domain name, whereas Baidu.com uses the pinyin of the two characters 百度, making it very easy to remember.

Moreover, according to a resolution passed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in 2008, the use of other languages, including Chinese, is allowed as part of internet top-level domain characters. Thus, in 2009, .中国 was officially written into the global root domain system. Website owners and companies interested might consider applying for a domain name with .中国 as the suffix.
