Yesterday, Lin Beixin, who had regained her freedom, sat on the bed with her mother to give an interview to journalists.

The 12 days of losing her freedom still make Lin Beixin cry in pain when she recalls them.

Lin Beixin, a girl from Lufeng working in Guangzhou, has never been outside of her province, but was "wanted" by Yiwu police in Zhejiang as the leader of a criminal gang. On July 16th, the 19-year-old was detained and then moved all the way to Yiwu, Zhejiang, losing her personal freedom for a total of 12 days. Information Times reported on this incident on July 23rd and 26th.

Yesterday morning, the girl Lin Beixin finally returned to Guangzhou. Although the local police admitted that they indeed "arrested the wrong person," apologized formally, and deleted the wanted information, the psychological trauma left for Lin Beixin will be hard to heal for a lifetime. She refused the police's compensation of 2000 yuan, only taking 100 yuan as an emergency fund, and returned to Guangzhou alone.

Yiwu police apologize: "The wanted information has been deleted"

Yesterday, Yiwu police announced the beginning and end of the event. After a series of investigations and surveys, the Yiwu police eventually excluded Lin Beixin's involvement in the case, and on the evening of July 27, 2010, sent her back to her home in Guangzhou by plane, notifying her family in advance to meet her at the airport.

Police say "Lin Beixin" checked into hotels six times

It is reported that Lin Beixin's arrest might be due to identity theft, and criminals likely used her stolen ID card to commit crimes. According to the investigation results, in August 2007, Lin Beixin's backpack was stolen at her workplace in Guangzhou (she did not report it at the time), which contained her ID card among other items. From September 2, 2007, to April 21, 2008, suspects used Lin Beixin's ID card four times to register at hotels and guesthouses in Guangzhou. From September 25, 2007, to September 11, 2008, suspects twice used Lin Beixin's ID card to register at hotels and guesthouses in Ningbo and Yiwu, Zhejiang.

On the evening of July 16, the Yuexiu District police in Guangdong arrested Lin Beixin and informed the Yiwu police on July 17. After receiving the situation report from the Guangdong police, the Yiwu police took it very seriously, immediately dispatching case-handling personnel to Guangzhou and Laiyang, Hunan, and other places to conduct a comprehensive verification of whether Lin Beixin was involved in the case.

On July 18, 2010, the Yingbei police station of Lufeng Public Security Bureau, where Lin Beixin's household registration was located, issued a certificate stating that Lin Beixin had reported the loss of her ID card in Guangzhou on September 9, 2007, and had reissued the ID card. On September 11, 2008, when the Yiwu police cracked the theft gang case, Lin Beixin should have been working in Guangdong. The ID card registered and used in Yiwu under Lin Beixin's name was not used by Lin Beixin herself but by another suspect, thus excluding Lin Beixin's involvement in the theft case.

During the period when Lin Beixin was being investigated by the police in Yiwu, she was placed in a hotel. The police purchased clothes for her to change into and made proper arrangements for her food and accommodation. To facilitate her contact with her family, the police also bought her a mobile phone and gave her some pocket money when she boarded the flight to return home.

Already apologized to Lin Beixin and her family

The Yiwu police have already apologized to Lin Beixin and her family regarding this incident, deleted the wanted information about her, and stated that they would provide compensation or damages according to relevant national laws. The Yiwu police said they would continue to increase their efforts in handling cases, ascertain the real identity of the fugitive suspects who misused Lin Beixin's ID card, and hold them criminally responsible accordingly.

At the same time, they would summarize and learn from the profound lessons of this incident, further standardize law enforcement and case handling, prevent similar incidents from happening again, and effectively protect citizens' legitimate rights and interests. Currently, Lin Beixin understands the work done by the Yiwu police according to legal procedures.

Morning of July 27 - Yiwu

Case dropped - She rejected 2000 yuan in compensation

On July 27, Lin Beixin was taken to the Choucheng police station in Yiwu to handle procedures related to dropping the case. The Yiwu police bought her a set of clothes, some gifts, and a mobile phone, apologized to her, and offered her 2000 yuan as compensation. "They said if the compensation wasn't enough, we could apply for compensation through judicial channels."

Lin Beixin accepted the apology from the Yiwu police but did not accept the 2000 yuan compensation. She just wanted to go home. To facilitate contact with her family, she accepted the mobile phone and 100 yuan for emergencies, fearing she wouldn't find her family at the airport and could take a taxi home. In the afternoon of July 27, the Yiwu police issued a temporary identity certificate and sent Lin Beixin on a flight to Guangzhou.

Night of July 27 - Guangzhou

Back home - Grandmother peeled a boiled egg for her to calm her nerves

Lin's family arrived at the airport to pick her up around 6 p.m. the previous evening, but the flight kept getting delayed. The plane finally landed at 11:05 p.m. Knowing her granddaughter had arrived safely, the grandmother waiting at home was very happy, saying repeatedly, "I'm relieved, I'm relieved." At 12:15 a.m., the family finally reunited downstairs. Following local customs, the grandmother threw a raw egg on the ground and smashed it, saying it could "drive away evil spirits and cleanse impurities." With tear-filled eyes, the grandmother went home and pulled her granddaughter to sit by the bed, peeling a boiled egg for her to eat to calm her nerves. For 12 days, Hu Yao, Lin's mother, waited anxiously every day for her daughter to come home. Her voice had become hoarse from crying, and seeing her daughter return, she couldn't help but shed tears again, heartbrokenly saying, "My daughter was clearly innocent, so why was she detained for so long?"

Three "decision documents" from the Yiwu police

Decision Document for Surveillance Residence

This document reads: "Suspect Lin Beixin, because there is no risk of social danger... it is decided to place her under surveillance at room 608 of Hongdengge Hotel in Yiwu City... The term of surveillance begins from July 23, 2010."

Decision Document for Termination of Surveillance Residence

On July 27, the Yiwu police issued the "Decision Document for Termination of Surveillance Residence": "Now, because it has been found that criminal responsibility should not be pursued, it is decided to terminate her surveillance residence."

Decision Document for Case Cancellation

On July 27, the Yiwu police issued the "Decision Document for Case Cancellation," which read: "Because there are no criminal facts, it is decided to cancel this case."

Family demands compensation

"Why were our appeals completely ineffective?"

"For 12 whole days, she lost her personal freedom, and she also has heart disease. What if something happened?" During the journalist's interview, Lin Beixin's family angrily accused, while the 19-year-old Lin Beixin kept her head down and cried. When talking about the painful parts, her mother also cried along with her.

Lin Beixin said she now wants to rest well for a while and doesn't plan to work temporarily, nor does she want to go out. In this girl's mind, her dignity has been greatly hurt, and she can't bear it. "People from my hometown and at my workplace all know about this matter. If I go out, people will definitely ask questions. I can't stand others' looks. The trauma left by this incident will stay with me for life. I want to seek justice and clear my name."

Want to sue but cannot afford the cost

Lin's family has seven siblings. Her father passed away two years ago from illness. Due to poverty, Lin Beixin and her two sisters dropped out of school early to work outside and support their two younger brothers studying at home and their 70-year-old grandmother. Mother Hu Yao said that she was already very happy that her daughter came back safely. Now, the whole family wants to seek justice for their daughter, but if they need to claim compensation, they cannot afford the litigation costs. They don't know what to do now.

Lin Beixin said that the Yiwu police explained that the theft gang leader had misused her ID card to check into hotels. After the gang members were caught, they insisted that the leader was named Lin Beixin. "They said I look very much like that leader, so he used my ID card without being suspected."

Materials proving her innocence were submitted, so why was she still detained in Yiwu?

However, the family questioned: Lin Beixin's ID card was lost three years ago and reported to the local police station for replacement. Even if she was caught that day, after hearing Lin Beixin's appeal, the police only needed to verify with the local police, and there would be no need to take her to Yiwu. "How can people be arrested so rashly? The materials proving her innocence have already been submitted, and the family even knelt and begged, abandoning our dignity. Why were our appeals completely ineffective? Why was she still detained in the detention center and then taken all the way to Yiwu?"

Lin Beixin said that the Yiwu police admitted during their apology that it was a "work error" and that they arrested the wrong person.
