On one side was his son, who had been stabbed seven times and was lying in the hospital bed waiting for treatment, on the other side were the hospital's endless bills. Yesterday, at the Third People's Hospital of Wuhou District in Chengdu, middle-aged man Wang Xianwei, who had lost his source of income, couldn't help but cry. If his son hadn't stepped forward that day, this family wouldn't have fallen into despair. On November 17th, 14-year-old boy Wang Wei saved his female classmate from being bullied by getting stabbed seven times, possibly resulting in a disabled hand. As of yesterday, the rescued female classmate has not visited him.
The Boldness During the Incident
When His Female Classmate Was Being Bullied, He Rushed In
At 5 PM on the 17th, near Weiji Road close to Taiping Temple, Chengdu Huayi Foreign Language School had just dismissed its students. When Wang Wei, a first-year junior high school student, walked about 400 meters out of the school, he saw several unruly teenagers teasing several girls from his class, saying vulgar things, and one of them even picked up a stone to chase and beat the girls.
"I really couldn't bear it. Seeing they were about my age, I shouted at them, hoping they would stop," said Wang Wei, lying in the hospital bed yesterday to a Chengdu Evening News reporter. Unexpectedly, two of the teenagers walked towards him, pushing him with their hands. Wang Wei pushed back slightly, and suddenly one of the teenagers pulled out a switchblade from his pocket and started slashing at him wildly.
Seven Stab Wounds, Possible Hand Disability
When more than ten teachers rushed to the scene of the incident, Wang Wei was lying on the ground bleeding profusely, and the assailants had already fled. The teachers split into two groups; one group stopped a car and sent Wang Wei to the hospital, while the other group searched for the attacker and reported the incident to the police.
Upon examination, doctors found that Wang Wei had seven stab wounds on both hands and abdomen. The abdominal wound was over ten centimeters long; the wound on his right shoulder was the most severe, almost severing his arm. The surgery lasted from 7 PM until the next morning. Although his life was saved, the doctor told Wang Wei's father that the child's hand might become disabled.
According to Chengdu Evening News reporters, the suspect has been arrested by the police at Huaxing Police Station, and the case has been submitted to the prosecutor for approval of arrest.
Embarrassment After the Incident
One Side: Family Worries About Medical Fees
The hospital issued a bill. Someone donated 500 yuan, quickly add some nutrition for his son: put some lard in the porridge and add an egg.
At 2 PM yesterday afternoon, at the Third People's Hospital of Wuhou District. Wang Wei's hands were wrapped in bandages and plaster, and his abdomen was stitched with long threads.
Father Wang Xianwei is enduring the pain of having no money. The school handed over 10,000 yuan to the hospital on the day of the incident, and Wang Xianwei didn't pay a single penny. "It's not that I don't want to pay, I just really don't have any money," said Wang Xianwei. He earns a living by pedaling a tricycle. With his son injured, he also stopped pedaling his tricycle, and his 86-year-old sick mother at home is left unattended.
Wang Xianwei took out a stack of papers from the drawer beside the bed. These were the hospital's collection notices, totaling five. Four were for 2000 yuan each, and one was for 1500 yuan. "I only have the 500 yuan donated by a stranger yesterday, and this money can only be used to let my son eat better, as his injury recovery needs nutrition." The added nutrition for his son was adding some lard to the porridge at noon and adding an egg.
The Other Side: The Silence of the Rescued Girl
More than ten days have passed, why hasn't the rescued girl gone to the hospital to see him?
Wang Wei said that the rescued girl and her parents have never appeared. At around 4 PM yesterday afternoon, Chengdu Evening News reporters met two of the involved girls at the school gate. A girl surnamed Wang said that at the time they were harassed by several people from society, and indeed Wang Wei stood up to stop it, resulting in him being injured. When Chengdu Evening News reporters asked the two girls why they hadn't visited Wang Wei after the incident, the two fell silent.
Reporter's Notes
The Son's Passion and the Father's Reality
After the incident, Wang Wei's father regretted his son's actions. As a father, he didn't wish for his son to be a hero, only hoping for his safety. As a 14-year-old boy, Wang Wei's ability is limited, and he certainly didn't expect such an action would bring so much burden and harm to himself and his family. When Chengdu Evening News reporters heard the injured Wang Wei say behind his father's back that he didn't regret it, his simplicity and passion moved us. But when we learned that the rescued girl and her family have remained silent, we felt regret for him.
