According to reports (reporter Wan Qin, correspondent Hong Fa), a man brutally beat his cohabiting girlfriend and then fell asleep. It was not until the next day when the police arrived that he realized his girlfriend had fallen from a great height after being beaten. Yesterday, it was learned that the Hongshan District Court sentenced the man to three years in prison for intentional injury in the first trial, and he was also ordered to compensate the parents of the deceased with more than 340,000 yuan.
Xiong, 33 years old, had been "three times imprisoned" for theft, provoking troubles, and drug use. After being released from prison, he cohabited with a woman named A Li (a pseudonym) from Jiangxia in a rented apartment on the 4th floor of a residential area in Qingling Township.
On the evening of June 7 last year, before Xiao Li returned to the rental place from Jiangxia, she called Xiong and asked him to wait for her. However, Xiong came back at midnight, which made Xiao Li very angry, and they started arguing. According to Xiong's confession to the police, he beat Xiao Li and then went out to buy instant noodles. When he came back, he heard Xiao Li crying in the bathroom but did not pay attention. After finishing the noodles, he went to sleep. Unexpectedly, at 6 o'clock in the morning, the police showed up, and he learned that Xiao Li had fallen from the 4th floor bathroom and had already died.
After identification by the public security authorities, Xiao Li had suffered from being beaten and strangled before her death, resulting in minor injuries. The Wuhan Psychiatric Hospital's forensic psychiatric appraisal determined that Xiao Li suffered from acute stress disorder. The beating, strangling, and intimidation she endured were directly related to the onset of this disease and led to her falling from a height.
In June this year, the prosecution charged Xiong with suspected intentional injury. Xiao Li's deaf-mute parents filed a civil lawsuit against Xiong, demanding compensation for various economic losses totaling 484,000 yuan.
After deliberation by the Hongshan District Court, it was determined that the charges brought by the prosecution against Xiong for intentional injury were valid. Since his criminal behavior caused economic losses to the plaintiffs, he should bear the main responsibility for compensation. Consequently, the court sentenced Xiong to three years in prison in the first trial and ordered him to compensate Xiao Li's parents for their economic losses amounting to 347,000 yuan. It is reported that both parties are dissatisfied with this verdict and have indicated their intention to appeal.
