China has established a tourism day, set for May 19th. May 19th is the opening day of "Xu Xiake's Travel Notes," and four hundred years ago, the day Xu Xiake left the west gate of Ninghai was given new meaning. Upon hearing the good news, people celebrated with joy. Looking back at the birth process of "May 19th China Tourism Day," it can be said that it has gathered the wisdom and sweat of many wise individuals across the country. For the establishment of this day, we in Ninghai have been actively promoting it, sparing no effort from government departments to all levels of society, making effective efforts. The ultimate establishment of "May 19th China Tourism Day" is gratifying and encouraging. Here, we specially publish an article to review the birth process of this day, express sincere respect and gratitude to everyone who made efforts for its birth, and to encourage us to continue moving forward, using the determination of Tourism Day as an opportunity to promote industrial transformation and upgrading, further advancing the comprehensive and scientific development of our county's economy and society.
Glory and Dreams
On March 30, 2011, the State Council Standing Committee officially decided: China will establish a National Tourism Day, set for May 19th. When the news came out, it was like a stone causing a thousand ripples, instantly boiling over with excitement among travel enthusiasts, cities, and all media outlets. People cheered and spread the news enthusiastically, in towns and rural areas, streets and alleys, on TV, the internet, newspapers... Truly, there was nowhere that didn’t talk about the Tourism Day, and no one who didn’t love it.
The establishment of China's Tourism Day means that China is truly beginning to move from being a major tourist country to becoming a strong one, symbolizing that people will consciously or unconsciously embrace a new lifestyle and method. Travel will become an indispensable part of people’s lives and even their existence.
After much anticipation, it has finally come. At that time, people looked forward with eager eyes; now, they celebrate and toast together.
When the news reached Ninghai, this quiet southern Jiangnan town instantly boiled over with excitement. As Ninghai citizens, a sense of pride surged deep within each of us.
China's Tourism Day is naturally a festival for all the Chinese people. However, Ninghai has every reason to feel particularly excited and proud. Because the establishment of "May 19th" as China's Tourism Day holds special and extraordinary significance for Ninghai. This significance not only lies in the fact that this date is the opening day of "Xu Xiake's Travel Notes," with the opening location being Ninghai, but also because the birth of this day has gathered the wisdom and hard work of the broad masses of Ninghai people, embodying the arduous efforts they have made consistently for a decade.
Glory and dreams have finally become reality at this moment. A traveler connects with a county, a county connects with a national holiday—Xu Xiake, Ninghai, and Chinese tourism—are now intertwined in countless ways that cannot be separated.
A magnificent chapter will be written in China's tourism history, as China now has its own Tourism Day, marking the beginning of a new era for Chinese tourism.
China's tourism history will also write a significant entry for Ninghai. “On the last day of the third month of Gui Chou, I left the west gate of Ninghai. Clouds scattered and the sun shone brightly, people were cheerful and the mountains gleamed..." From then on, the step Xu Xiake took 400 years ago from Ninghai has been re-endowed with a brand-new and sacred meaning. What was once the starting point has now become the birthplace. Ninghai will undoubtedly become a "holy site" on the map of Chinese tourism, a "landmark" in the hearts of travelers.
The whole nation should celebrate, the entire city is celebrating.
If Xu Xiake knew from below, he would surely smile in his grave. He probably never imagined that his lifelong journey not only created a great book in Chinese history, establishing his position in the history of Chinese geography and culture, but also achieved a holiday for China four hundred years later, and a city.
However, from the day of application until the final confirmation of the date, through countless days and nights, we endured a kind of waiting and torment! Waiting anxiously, and enduring while waiting. But we are without regrets. After ten years of chasing the same dream, today it has finally come true. The moment the good news arrived, there was only joy, only ecstatic joy. In that moment, all the efforts were worth it.
We raise our glasses in celebration, but at this moment, our joy and pride cannot be contained by mere sips of wine!
We should also give thanks. Thank you, young Xu Xiake, for setting the grand ambition "to travel from the blue sea in the morning to the dark cypress in the evening." Thank you for your grand feat of traveling tens of thousands of miles and wandering for thirty years. We should especially thank you for taking that step out of Ninghai's west gate. We should also thank those known and unknown individuals, thank them for their sincere calls and every vote they cast. Thank the leaders at all levels for their attention and support to our county's "application day" work. Thank the numerous experts and scholars for their foresight and the various efforts they have made for the establishment of "May 19th" as China's Tourism Day.
Consensus Achieved
"China Tourism Day" was ultimately determined to be May 19th, which can be seen as a result of widespread consensus. However, it was not a smooth process, but rather quite circuitous. From the initial proposal to the final confirmation, it has unknowingly passed ten full years.
For the Chinese people, the establishment of "China Tourism Day" is indeed a "love delayed."
As early as 1979, the United Nations World Tourism Organization designated September 27th as World Tourism Day. Thirty years have passed, during which many countries around the world have had their own tourism days, but China, as a major tourist country, did not. According to forecasts by the World Tourism Organization, China will become the world's largest tourist destination country by 2015. To transition from a major tourist country to a strong one, China needs a carrier, and the best carrier is undoubtedly Tourism Day.
In other words, China should have had its own Tourism Day long ago.
More than ten years ago, at the end of the last century, the county party committee and county government, understanding the situation and looking ahead, recognized that as a sunrise industry in the service sector, tourism, due to its driving force and relevance, will inevitably become a pillar industry for future economic and social development. They recognized the importance of developing tourism for boosting industrial transformation and upgrading, and realized that Ninghai's green mountains and clear waters offer great potential for tourism development. In November 1998, Ninghai County Tourism Bureau was specifically established, and a call was issued to make Ninghai tourism well-known as the starting place of "Xu Xiake's Travel Notes." In 1999, Ma Shaoyin, then deputy director of Ninghai County Tourism Bureau, conceived the idea of applying for May 19th, the opening day of "Xu Xiake's Travel Notes," as China Tourism Day during activities at the Ningbo venue of the "World Tourism Day" conference. In 2000, under the name of "Ninghai Xu Xiake Tourism Club," Ninghai Tourism Bureau issued the "Xu Xiake Tourism Club Declaration," first proposing in writing the suggestion to set "5·19" as "China Tourism Day." Since then, successive leaders of Ninghai's Party Committee, People's Congress, Government, and Political Consultative Conference have conducted multiple surveys and understood public opinions regarding the "application day" matter, organized relevant meetings, and actively promoted planning and advancement work. Over the past decade, hundreds of thousands of knowledgeable individuals not only responded positively to this initiative but also worked tirelessly for it.
China should have its own tourism day, and this has become a common call throughout society over the past ten years.
In March 2008, the Zhejiang Provincial Tourism Bureau submitted a document to the National Tourism Administration requesting that "5·19" be designated as "China Tourism Day." On June 16, 2008, the National Tourism Administration held a preliminary meeting in Beijing to establish "China Tourism Day." On February 12, 2009, Zhejiang Province convened a tourism development conference where the head of the National Tourism Administration personally attended and signed a memorandum of close cooperation mechanism with provincial leadership, including: supporting the designation of May 19th, the opening day of "Xu Xiake's Travel Notes," as "China Tourism Day."
On December 3, 2009, the State Council issued an opinion on accelerating the development of the tourism industry, clearly stating the need to establish "China Tourism Day;" on December 4, the China National Tourism Administration officially launched related work to establish "China Tourism Day;" on December 7, the office of the "China Tourism Day Planning Special Committee" publicly solicited specific date plans for the establishment of "China Tourism Day," conducting surveys on People.com.cn and Sina.com...
The establishment of "China Tourism Day" was finally placed on the agenda.
In late August 2010, the ministerial conference of China, Japan, and South Korea was held in Hangzhou, where leading provincial officials suggested to the National Tourism Administration that "5.19" be established as China's National Tourism Day.
Although it was decided to establish China Tourism Day, choosing which day was crucial.
Experts generally agreed that the establishment of "China Tourism Day" should create a cultural concept and select a historical figure related to tourism to give the tourism day deeper cultural connotations. Thus, many cultural celebrities in Chinese history were proposed, such as King Mu of Zhou, Emperor Qianlong, Confucius, Wang Zhaojun, Li Dao yuan, and Li Bai. After selection and comparison, most experts favored one name - Xu Xiake.
Choosing Xu Xiake for "China Tourism Day" was not accidental.
Xu Xiake, as an outstanding traveler, geologist, and literary giant in Chinese history, spent over 30 years exploring famous mountains and rivers, leaving footprints in 19 provinces across the country. He was the first person in China to dedicate his life to travel, earning the title of "Chinese Pilgrim Sage." His 600,000-word "Xu Xiake's Travel Notes" is an encyclopedia integrating geography, geology, sociology, literature, and tourism studies, called a timeless masterpiece, a source of pride for the Chinese nation, and a treasure trove for developing large-scale tourism. It is listed by academia as one of the 20 most influential works in China. Xu Xiake was also rated as one of the 40 most influential cultural figures in China. Moreover, he fully embodied noble qualities such as patriotism, love for life, respect for science, emphasis on practice, and care for nature, along with the indomitable national spirit. Xu Xiake enjoys renown worldwide, and various commemorative cultural activities in his honor are thriving and highly influential today. It can be said that Xu Xiake has become a great cornerstone for China's tourism to reach world-class status. Furthermore, Xu Xiake, an environmentalist and ecotourist from over 400 years ago, embodies values and concepts such as harmony between humans and nature that align perfectly with modern tourism views and methods. His spirit fits contemporary China's development and gives modern society deeper significance.
Therefore, setting "China Tourism Day" on the opening day of "Xu Xiake's Travel Notes" to forever remember and honor Xu Xiake, and to promote China's bold steps towards becoming a global tourism powerhouse, is not only appropriate and necessary, but also touching and humane.
Vice President of the China Xu Xiake Research Association, Yao Bingzhong, said that linking "China Tourism Day" with Xu Xiake is a very suitable choice, and only Xu Xiake can shoulder this heavy responsibility.
Which day would be suitable for China to establish Tourism Day? Experts generally favored the opening day of "Xu Xiake's Travel Notes" — May 19th.
Vice Chairman of the Chinese Culture Promotion Association, Jin Jianfan, stated that setting the opening day of "Xu Xiake's Travel Notes" as "China Tourism Day" has better regional coverage and extensive commemorative significance, which helps improve the recognition of the Chinese people as the largest tourist destination in the world.
Director of the Leisure Research Center at Renmin University, Wang Qiyan, expressed that setting the opening day of Xu Xiake's monumental 600,000-word "Travel Notes" as "China Tourism Day" not only commemorates the outstanding traveler Xu Xiake but also significantly promotes post-Olympic era and financial crisis tourism industry development, transformation, and upgrading, spreads scientific tourism and healthy leisure concepts, advocates environmental protection, and upholds traditional national culture.
Deputy General Manager of China International Travel Service Corporation, Chen Yueyang, said: Ninghai not only has abundant natural landscapes but also a strong historical and cultural background. Setting the opening day of "Xu Xiake's Travel Notes," May 19th, as "China Tourism Day" can enhance travelers' awareness and continuation of historical and cultural learning.
State Council Advisor and former member of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Ren Yuling, believed that the weather on May 19th is suitable, and it carries profound implications. We should set May 19th as "China Tourism Day" to continue Xu Xiake's patriotic sentiment for the country's mountains and waters, plants and trees, which helps broaden horizons, cultivate sentiments, increase knowledge, and promote health through tourism.
...
Many scholars and tourism experts in the country wrote articles suggesting that this day be set as "China Tourism Day."
China's Tourism Day favors Xu Xiake, and Xu Xiake favors Ninghai. Xu Xiake's choice of Ninghai as the starting place for his travelogue was not accidental.
Mount Tiantai, where Ninghai is located, is the eastern end of the great southern dragon pulse of the motherland. To focus on investigating the less documented geographical features and scenic beauty of the southern regions of the motherland, one must start from the eastern slope of Mount Tiantai near the sea. Xu Xiake once wrote in "Examination of the Source of the Yangtze River": "Not knowing the dragon vein, so not distinguishing the source of the river...". Ninghai is located on the eastern slope of Mount Tiantai, backed by the great southern dragon pulse, facing the East Sea, with purple qi coming from the east, revered as a fairyland by ancient people. Additionally, Mount Tiantai itself has a deep historical and cultural foundation, being a famous mountain where Taoism originated, Buddhism thrived, and immortals gathered. Wang Qiao, Ge Xuan, Tao Hongjing, and others either founded religions or practiced cultivation here, leaving their footprints. Under the nurturing of Mount Tiantai, Ninghai also produced great Confucians like Hu Sanxian and Fang Xiaoru. These were all familiar and admired by Xu Xiake, who loved the mountains and rivers of the motherland and was determined to investigate famous mountains and rivers, as well as respected three-religion scholars. Therefore, it is not difficult to understand why Xu Xiake began his travelogue in Ninghai. One could say that starting in Ninghai was a careful choice Xu Xiake made after long-term in-depth research into the geography and cultural history of the motherland.
The selection of "5.19" as China's Tourism Day is not only the foresight of experts but also the earnest hope of the general public and tourism enthusiasts, who have been continuously calling and advocating for it:
On May 19, 2002, Gao Shujun, the first person in China to drive into old age and a contemporary "Xu Xiake," read out the proposal to set May 19th, the opening day of "Xu Xiake's Travel Notes," as "China Tourism Day" at the first Ninghai Xu Xiake Tour Festival;
