Plot introduction:

The story of the eponymous original work by Eileen Chang takes place in Shanghai during WWII, where various forces are intertwined. A female spy disguised as a student gets close to Mr. Yee's wife, trying to obtain intelligence, but ends up falling in love with Mr. Yee. Although it is a spy novel, most of its content focuses on the complicated and tangled love between the two. By looking at Mr. Yee's inner monologue in the novel, we can understand the tone of the story: "He was not optimistic about the war situation. What did he know about his future? To find a soulmate, even death would be worth it. He felt her shadow would always accompany him, comfort him. Even though she hated him, her last feelings for him were so intense that they transcended any specific emotion—just having feelings was enough. They were in a primitive relationship of hunter and prey, tiger and伥, ultimate possession. She was truly his person in life, and his ghost in death."

The distributor of this movie is Focus Features, which has previously distributed Brokeback Mountain. James Schamus, CEO of Focus Features and an old friend of Ang Lee, will serve as the executive producer of this film.
