Haikou Evening News, January 21st - Yesterday afternoon, one of our photographers was attacked by several men wearing dark blue uniforms while conducting a normal interview and taking photos outside Haidian Court, resulting in a head injury. The photography equipment was also damaged. The court stated that they would investigate the matter, with results expected next week.

Four or Five People Chased and Assaulted the Reporter and Smashed His Camera

At around 2:20 PM yesterday, our photographer was standing on the sidewalk opposite the north gate of Haidian Court when a man pointed at him and shouted loudly, "There's someone taking pictures over there."

Simultaneously, four or five men in dark blue uniforms rushed across the road barrier toward the photographer.

The photographer said that seeing them rushing towards him, he instinctively retreated, running about ten meters. Then he heard them shout, "Stop!" He stopped and told the approaching men, "I'm a reporter, if you want my camera, you can have it." They replied, "Do you know the rules?" as they continued to chase and assault him, cornering him and pushing him down. They punched his head with their fists. The entire process lasted about two minutes. During the beating, the photographer kept emphasizing that he was a journalist conducting a normal interview. One man grabbed his camera and smashed it on the ground, picked it up and left, asking if he had any memory cards on him.

Reporters were Taken to the Court Guard Room by the Assaulters

Subsequently, two other men took the reporter to the guard room of the court. Inside the guard room, the photographer realized his glasses were missing. One man led the reporter back to where he was beaten and found his broken glasses. The man said the glasses could not be taken and brought the reporter back again. After returning, the reporter’s bag was searched by several men, and they demanded to see his credentials. Two text reporters from our newspaper entered the guard room and found the photographer leaning against the wall inside, with visible external injuries on his arms. He said he felt dizzy, nauseous, and had difficulty maintaining balance.

Around 3 PM, relevant personnel from Haidian Court accompanied the photographer to the emergency department of Haidian Hospital for examination. The results showed that the photographer had a blood swelling on his head and needed a follow-up check in three days.

After checking, the reporter discovered that the telephoto lens, wide-angle lens, and small camera he carried were all damaged.

Court Says Whether Judicial Police Assaulted Reporters Still Needs Verification

At around 7 PM last night, a responsible person from the relevant department of our newspaper, commissioned by the leadership, went to Haidian Court to understand the cause of the incident. Deputy President Huang of Haidian Court stated that the court would investigate this matter, but the investigation results are expected to be available only next week.

Deputy President Huang said that based on the facts of the beatings as stated by the reporters, he had previously questioned the judicial police of the court, but no one admitted to assaulting the reporters, so whether the attackers were court personnel still needs further investigation.
