The troublemaker Wang Xiaoliang went to his grandmother's house. He saw a lot of frogs in the rice fields next to her house, so he started catching them. Someone saw him and said that frogs are friends of humans, and advised him not to catch them, but he wouldn't listen. In the end, he caught frogs until it was dark, filling up a large bucket. He had caught all the frogs in the field. That night, when he returned home, he didn't get a wink of sleep.
First, the big bucket of frogs croaked loudly, giving him a headache. His uncle scolded him and ordered him to return the frogs to the fields the next morning. Then, just as he fell asleep, he heard knocking on the door. When he opened it, he saw a group of grasshoppers, leeches, and rice insects banging drums and setting off fireworks to thank him. They held several large banners which read: "Thank you, great hero Wang Xiaoliang, for eliminating our natural enemies and pests. The insect population of the Xishuigou rice fields will forever be grateful to you. We hope you don't let those bad frogs escape." Afraid that his uncle would hear the commotion and come out to yell at him again, Wang Xiaoliang hurriedly asked them to stop the drums, fireworks, and banners and go back to the rice fields.
After the grasshoppers and rice insects left, there was another commotion outside. There was more knocking on the door. Wang Xiaoliang thought the grasshoppers had returned, but when he opened the door, he saw a large group of frogs, toads, and even some winter tree frogs. They were also banging drums and holding banners, though they didn't set off fireworks. The banners read: "Return our flesh and blood compatriots. If you do not return them, blood debts must be repaid with blood. Illegal detention is a crime." As Wang Xiaoliang stood at the door wondering what it meant to repay a blood debt with blood, the frogs inside heard their kindred coming to rescue them and began to croak too. Outside, hearing the noise from inside, they became even more urgent. A toad jumped onto Wang Xiaoliang's foot and looked up at him threateningly: "Wang Xiaoliang, will you release my frog brothers or not? If you don't, I'll bite you to death!" Before Wang Xiaoliang could react, a toad jumped onto his shoulder, its tongue flickering as it spoke to him: "I am the cousin of the frogs. If you don't release my younger cousins, I'll spray venom into your mouth. Will you release them or not?" Scared, Wang Xiaoliang's legs trembled, and he hurriedly said: "Yes, yes, I'll release them immediately! Young lady, I'm twenty-eight years old, please come down quickly."
He released all the frogs, who happily banged their drums and left, leaving Wang Xiaoliang deeply frightened. He thought to himself: "From now on, I must never catch beneficial insects again."
