"Dad, when can I go back to school?" Yesterday, at the fifth floor internal medicine ward of Chongqing Green Hospital in Jiulongpo District, 12-year-old Ming Xinwei asked his father Ming Zongcai.
Due to type one diabetes, little Wei has been hospitalized multiple times. After this recent coma and being rushed to the hospital by his aunt, he was rescued from the brink of death after two days and two nights of emergency treatment.
At the beginning of this month, with the help of the Jiulongpo District Social Security Office and Chongqing Green Hospital, little Wei obtained a cooperative medical insurance policy. In three months, he will be able to enjoy medical reimbursement.
Mother left home seven years ago
Little Wei's hometown is in Tangjiawan Production Team, Muguavillage, Yongxin Town, Qijiang County. He has an older sister who is four years older than him. When little Wei was four and a half years old, he was diagnosed with type one diabetes due to a high fever. Because of financial difficulties, his condition was delayed.
Ming Zongcai, over 40 years old, looks like a man in his sixties with a face full of wrinkles. "The child has suffered. The day his mother found out about his diabetes, she left home," said his aunt Ming Zongmei. As a result, she had no choice but to raise the two children together with her brother. Little Wei is very sensible. "For seven years, he has always injected himself. Each time, he would run to a corner to hide, only coming out after he finished injecting," Ming Zongmei said. To earn money for little Wei's treatment, Ming Zongcai has been working as a porter in the main city, barely supporting the family.
Father cried in desperation
In May 2010, little Wei suddenly started vomiting uncontrollably and experienced severe abdominal pain. Due to lack of funds, Ming Zongcai was extremely afraid. At that moment, he only had 20 yuan left in his pocket. Worried that his son might die, Old Ming cried desperately and ran to the hospital without hesitation. Fortunately, upon learning that little Wei had severe diabetes, Green Hospital admitted him.
On March 7th of this year, little Wei fell into a coma again. His aunt Ming Zongmei brought him to the hospital, where he was saved after 48 hours of emergency treatment. Dr. Miao Yuxin, head of the internal medicine department at Green Hospital, said that after diagnosis, little Wei had diabetic ketoacidosis, which could endanger his life at any time. Now, follow-up treatment is crucial.
Dr. Miao explained that the best way to treat little Wei's condition is through insulin pump control or stem cell transplantation.
Received donation of 30,000 yuan
To make it easier for little Wei to see a doctor, last year, Ming Zongcai moved the family to Huayan, where little Wei attended Huayan Primary School. Since his admission on March 7th, little Wei has missed quite a bit of homework.
Upon hearing that the cost of little Wei's follow-up treatment would exceed 100,000 yuan, Ming Zongcai has already borrowed 70,000-80,000 yuan from relatives. Yesterday afternoon, all medical security workers in Jiulongpo District held a donation event at Green Hospital. A 92-year-old grandmother named Su specifically went to the donation site on the 12th floor to contribute. Tan Xingyue, who works as a porter with Ming Zongcai, put down his work and specially came to the hospital to donate. This event raised a total of 34,798.3 yuan in donations, which will be supervised by the Jiulongpo District Urban and Rural Medical Insurance Supervision Center and used exclusively for little Wei's follow-up treatment.
Forever remember the kindness of good people
On the 15th, Chongqing Evening News learned that at the beginning of this month, with the help of staff from the Jiulongpo District Urban and Rural Medical Insurance Center, little Wei participated in the urban and rural residents' cooperative medical insurance. In three months, he will be able to enjoy medical reimbursement under the cooperative medical system. For this impoverished family, this medical insurance undoubtedly provides them with additional security.
On March 11th, the Jiulongpo District Medical Insurance Center issued an appeal to the district's social security system and medical institutions to donate for little Wei. So far, they have raised more than 30,000 yuan in donations. Lin Liquan, director of the district's urban and rural medical insurance office, said, "We hope that all sectors of society will extend a helping hand to help little Wei recover soon and return to the classroom."
Speaking of the help so many kind-hearted people have given to his son, Ming Zongcai's eyes became moist: "Their great kindness, we will never forget."
