As is well known, Microsoft is the English name of the software giant. However, in Portugal, the sole legitimate user of this name is another company. This company registered the "Microsoft" trademark in Portugal as early as 1981. Microsoft started its operations in Portugal in 1990 but had to register "MSFT" as its trademark in Portugal, the same as its Nasdaq stock trading code.

The CEO of the Portuguese company Microsoft, Ricardo Carvalho, said on Monday that the company plans to auction its brand and business online on eBay this coming Wednesday, with an initial asking price of $1 million.

Carvalho stated: "Microsoft has clearly expressed interest in purchasing our trademark but needs more time to discuss related specific issues. We have negotiated with Microsoft about this in the past, and now we are no longer willing to wait for this matter." So far, Microsoft spokespeople have not yet responded to this matter.
