In 2002, all members of my family became devout believers in the Internet. For the older generation who fear new technology, signing up for an email account was their greatest concession. At least they could use email to contact their children when they are not at home. Everyone liked to send emails to my niece because this little girl always found herself tongue-tied on the phone and would instead stick to her computer every day. But just as we adults started getting used to using email, she gave it up. I found out that she was annoyed by using email to communicate with her elders. That's when I realized that using email was not a sign of keeping up with the times, but rather being outdated.
