Qingyan Ancient Town is located in the southern suburbs of Guiyang City, about 29 kilometers from the city center. It is one of the most famous cultural ancient towns in Guizhou Province. Tourists immediately feel its rich ancient charm upon arrival.

Qingyan Ancient Town has a long history, dating back to the establishment of Qingyan Fortress in the eleventh year of Hongwu during the Ming Dynasty (1378 AD), and it has a history of over 600 years. In the early Ming Dynasty, the central government established the Guizhou Guard Commandery to control the southwestern frontier in the sixth year of Hongwu (1373 AD) to manage the transportation routes between Sichuan, Yunnan, Hunan, and Guangxi. Since Qingyan was located at the midpoint of the main road leading from Guangxi to Guiyang, post stations ("pu") were set up along this road for official document delivery and military intelligence transmission. Troops stationed under the Shuangshi Peak beside the road built a garrison, historically known as “Qingyan Garrison.” In the fourteenth year of Hongwu (1381 AD), Zhu Yuanzhang dispatched 300,000 troops to conquer Yunnan and Guizhou, after which large numbers of troops settled down to cultivate the land. The "garrison" gradually developed into a village where both soldiers and civilians lived together, transforming “Qingyan Garrison” into “Qingyan Fortress.” Between the fourth and seventh years of Tianqi (1624-1627 AD), Ban LinGui, who led the defense of Qingyan and governed 72 villages and controlled the Eight Prefectures and Twelve Offices, built an earthen city approximately one kilometer away from Qingyan Fortress on the “Si Zhi Ba” slope (a place name). This earthen city was then referred to as “Wang Cheng” (King’s City), translated into Chinese as “Bing Cheng” (Military City) or “Ying Pan” (Campsite), representing the prototype of today’s Qingyan City. Built at a high and perilous location, the original residents within Qingyan Fortress moved into the earthen city to avoid warfare, allowing the earthen city to grow in scale and become a crucial crossroads connecting Dingfan (today’s Huishui County) to the south, Guiyang to the north, Pingba County to the west, and Longli County to the east. After several centuries of historical vicissitudes and multiple renovations and expansions, the earthen city evolved into stone walls and stone-paved streets. Today, Qingyan City has become a cultural ancient town with Ming and Qing architectural styles. As a historical and cultural ancient town in Guizhou Province, Qingyan boasts over a hundred cultural heritage sites, among which 23 have been included in the >. Beneath the ever-changing Lion Mountain, ancient town landmarks are scattered everywhere. There are 37 well-preserved Ming and Qing ancient buildings within the town, including nine temples, eight shrines, five pavilions, three caves, two ancestral halls, one palace, one academy, and eight stone archways, of which three still exist today. These ancient buildings are all exquisitely designed masterpieces, such as the stone carvings of Ciyun Temple and the wood carvings of Shoufo Temple, which are rare treasures in Guiyang City. Temples and pavilions are adorned with painted beams and flying eaves, some of which remain intact despite the passage of time.

The layout of Qingyan Town still follows the Ming and Qing patterns, preserving complete gateways, side gates, as well as old stone and wooden counters, evoking a sense of ancient charm. The newly constructed ancient town commercial street further promotes the ancient town's unique style.

Standing on the restored Dingguang Gate wall, one can still faintly see the remnants of the ancient city walls, evoking images of the town's past as a heavily fortified military stronghold. Facing the uniquely designed lion sculptures on the "Zhao Lilen Centenarian Archway," praised by Master Liu Haishu as "truly rare," as well as the cultural and historical significance contained in the other two stone archways, one can savor a glimpse of the ancient town's culture. Stepping into the residence of Zhao Yijiong, the first imperial scholar in Guizhou's history, the former residence of Mr. Ping Gang, Secretary-General of General Sun Yat-sen's headquarters, the site of the internationally shocking "Qingyan Case," and the former residences of relatives of proletarian revolutionary elders like Zhou Enlai, Deng Yingchao, and Li Kenong, one cannot help but marvel at the rich cultural landscapes present in this small town.

Qingyan also boasts its own famous local specialties. Rose sugar (originally called "Ma Pian Tang") is delicious and sweet, first produced by the Ping family in 1874 and passed down as a century-old brand. Qingyan Double Flower Vinegar, also over a hundred years old, remains popular. Its thick vinegar liquid retains its form even when held in a bowl, dark red with a hint of black, moderately sour with a lingering sweet aroma that "Old Guiyang" locals particularly favor.
