On June 22, a serious incident of driving into people occurred at Mazda's Hiroshima plant. A former employee of Mazda drove into two Mazda plants in Hiroshima City, recklessly hitting people, resulting in 1 death and 10 injuries, with two critically injured. The suspect confessed to the police that he harbored resentment against the company after being dismissed not long ago.

The man called the police after committing the crime.

According to Japanese media reports, at around 7:40 am on June 22, the Hiroshima Prefectural Police received an alarm from Mazda's Ushita Plant in Minami Ward, Hiroshima City, reporting that someone had driven into the factory premises and hit people.

About 20 minutes later, the police received a call from a man. The man said that he was dismissed by Mazda two months ago and there were still many unresolved issues. "Today, I wanted to do something at Mazda's factory. After entering through the main gate, I lost control..."

This man told the police his current location and requested them to come over. The police subsequently found the man about 2 kilometers away from the Fuchu Plant on a road section and searched out a kitchen knife with an approximately 18 cm blade from his car.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man's name is Hikaru Sakurai, aged 42, residing in Hiroshima City.

Based on information provided by the Hiroshima Prefectural Police and Mazda Corporation, Sakurai drove a blue Mazda Familia car that morning, disregarding the security guards' attempts to stop him as he forcibly entered the Ushita Plant through the main gate, running down people at four locations and injuring seven people. Subsequently, Sakurai drove into the neighboring Fuchu Plant, injuring four more people at three locations. All free

After hitting people, Sakurai fled the factory through the north gate.

After receiving the alarm, the Hiroshima City Fire Department dispatched vehicles to urgently transport the injured to nearby three hospitals. An employee of the Fuchu Plant, Hiroshi Hamada, succumbed to his injuries, with two others seriously wounded and eight lightly injured.

The incident occurred during the day shift employees' arrival time.

At the time of the incident, it was precisely the day shift employees' arrival time.

A male employee told the Mainichi Shimbun reporter that he took a shuttle bus to work and saw people lying on the ground in the factory area with blood streaming from their heads. "I wondered what happened? There are many employees here, so some may harbor grievances... But this kind of thing shouldn't happen again."

A resident near the Mazda factory told Japan's Jiji Press that he heard alarms going off, climbed onto the roof to look towards the factory area, "The police and rescue personnel were swarming around there." He initially thought it was some kind of workplace accident, "but didn't expect it to be such a tragic event."

A 63-year-old Yoshikazu Yoshida described the scene after Sakurai fled to the Yomiuri Shimbun reporter, "The front-left bumper of the car was dented, and the windshield in front of the passenger seat had web-like cracks, with what appeared to be blood stains."

That noon, Masanori Yamauchi, president of Mazda, held a press conference, bowing his head in condolences and sympathy for the victims and their families.

Initially determined as a random killing case.

Sakurai used to be a short-term contract worker for Mazda, not a regular employee. Data provided by Mazda's Tokyo headquarters showed that between February and April this year, the company hired about 150 short-term contract workers.

According to the Sankei Shimbun, last June, Mazda was reprimanded in writing by the Hiroshima Labor Bureau for allegedly violating the "Dispatch Worker Law".

Japan's Kyodo News reported that Sakurai confessed that he harbored resentment against the company, "At the time, I also thought about parking the car inside the factory and then getting out to stab people with a knife."

The Hiroshima police arrested Sakurai on charges of attempted murder and violation of the firearms and swords control law. They preliminarily considered this to potentially be a random killing and injury case and were searching for relevant evidence and motives.

In recent years, Japan has occasionally seen cases of indiscriminate killings, with the most sensational being the Akihabara massacre. In June 2008, a man drove a truck into Tokyo's bustling electronics district of Akihabara, ramming and stabbing pedestrians, resulting in 7 deaths and 10 injuries.
