On May 9, 2010, a post titled "The Vice Principal of ×× Elementary School in Nanning City: Fond of Indulging in Extramarital Affairs" appeared on a well-known domestic website. The poster, "Qiannian Tanren," wrote in the post that a person named "Old Yang" had "picked up" a handbag by chance. In addition to a considerable amount of cash and account books, there were also two mobile phones inside the bag, which stored the text message sending and receiving content of the owner from December 2, 2009 to April 25, 2010. The accumulated text messages reached nearly 100,000 words. Through these text message contents, it can be seen that the vice principal not only had improper relationships with several female teachers at his school but also had certain issues in terms of economics. Since the time, location, as well as the names and positions of the people involved in the text messages were not processed, it looked very realistic. The post was quickly reprinted by numerous websites and forums within just one day after its release. Is the post by "Qiannian Tanren" true? Does this act belong to anonymous reporting or an invasion of the parties' privacy? On May 10, reporters from our newspaper conducted corresponding investigations and interviews.

The poster claimed: The vice principal keeps all the benefits within the family

The reporter printed out "Qiannian Tanren's" post using five-point SimSun font in a WORD document, and it turned out to be as long as 131 pages. If including the displayed phone numbers, dates, and other additional content, there were over 150,000 words in total. Excluding the additional content, the accumulated text messages still reached nearly 100,000 words. Most of the text message contents indicated that the vice principal maintained ambiguous relationships with several female colleagues, making netizens who browsed the post fully aware of the vice principal's private life.

At the beginning of the post, "Qiannian Tanren" wrote such words: "Standing close to the water tower, one gets the moonlight first! This is the life philosophy believed by the vice principal. He eventually found out that even if he ate it, it was for nothing. Su Mou, Li Mou, Qin Mou, Wei Mou, Huang Moumou, Su Moumou... With so many beauties around, why should 'the benefit flow into someone else's field'?"

In the text message exchanges on February 7, 2010, a person named Li Moumou had an intense "conversation" via text message with the vice principal. It can be seen that Li Moumou's spouse was a teacher at the vice principal's school, and the ambiguous relationship between the vice principal and Li Moumou's spouse was discovered by Li Moumou, who then "demanded an explanation" through text messages. This vice principal expressed that he was "willing to accompany."

Among the faculty of the elementary school where the vice principal worked, after multiple verifications by the reporter, some of the female teachers mentioned—Su Mou, Li Mou, Qin Mou, Wei Mou, Huang Moumou, Su Moumou—were indeed confirmed to exist.

Insiders revealed: The vice principal's arrogance in playing with women

At around 8 p.m., the reporter telephoned Li Moumou, who had previously criticized the vice principal for playing with his wife in the text messages. After the call was connected, upon learning that the reporter wanted to understand the "grudge" between him and the vice principal, Li Moumou immediately stated that this vice principal had an improper relationship with his ex-wife Wei Mou. After the matter was exposed, the vice principal, thinking himself wealthy, acted arrogantly and has not even apologized until now. Currently, Li Moumou has divorced Wei Mou.

According to Li Moumou's introduction, during the Spring Festival earlier this year, he was hospitalized for a long time in another place due to illness. His ex-wife Wei Mou, who was a music teacher at the school where the vice principal worked, always used the excuse of being "busy with work" and never visited or cared for him. Li Moumou, lying in bed, was taken care of by his brother.

After the relationship between the vice principal and Wei Mou was exposed, the angry Li Moumou chose to divorce.

Experts indicated: Online privacy protection requires industry self-discipline

What is the truth about the "text message scandal"? This still needs to be investigated and verified by relevant authorities. However, what cannot be ignored is that this incident once again triggered a serious discussion among netizens.

After the post appeared online, it was quickly reprinted by numerous domestic websites. Some websites had extremely high reply rates. Many netizens said that this post was no different from whistleblowing and firmly supported it; however, some netizens also expressed concerns because the post contained nearly 100,000 words and involved many people. Some netizens commented: "Not to mention that the post includes many people unrelated to this matter, even naming and exposing the private lives of the vice principal and several female teachers, is this legal?"

It is understood that currently, regular domestic websites, in order to protect citizens' privacy, will all note on their pages: "Please abide by national laws and regulations, do not post illegal information, and bear full civil and criminal responsibility for your actions." And "Please respect network ethics, do not use foul language, and do not infringe on others' rights and personal privacy." However, websites are unable to identify the authenticity of posts. Apart from requiring posters to voluntarily comply with relevant rules, they have yet to form an effective prevention mechanism. This loophole urgently needs improvement by relevant departments.

National People's Congress representative and associate professor of law at Xichang College in Sichuan Province, Wang Mingwen, once led the proposal of "The Proposal for Formulating the Network Privacy Protection Law." Wang Mingwen believes that China's legislation on network privacy protection is currently very lagging behind, and the self-discipline of the network industry is still relatively poor. Abroad, there are two models for protecting network privacy: one is legal protection model, and the other is industry self-discipline model. The United States represents the industry self-discipline model, mainly relying on the network industry to constrain itself and adopt some related methods and means to protect netizens' privacy. Because the network industry is an emerging industry, early legislation during its development may bring negative impacts on it. Therefore, through the method of self-discipline of the network industry, it can promote the better and healthier development of the Internet.
