Crystal Dynamics, the group responsible for Lara's fate and her potential return to the gaming market, previously developed "The Legacy of Kain - Soul Reaver" using an innovative engine distinct from previous versions. The Xbox 360 will be the first platform for this game, leveraging the console's powerful computing capabilities to present a meticulously designed seventh-generation Lara, offering players a fresh experience in terms of appearance, scenery, and fluidity of movement.
In this installment, Lara's adventures will revisit ancient tombs she has encountered in the past, reviving many memories. One adventure reveals a tragic event involving Lara's close friend Amanda Evert. Amanda, a graduate in social anthropology, was also a radical pure philosophy chronicler. She held strong beliefs that the common concept of "reality" was illusory and empty, pushing the infinite truth of the soul into the abyss.
Amanda had an incomplete yet promising theory suggesting forgotten mystical beliefs still existed, such as rituals from the Yellow Sect (a sect followed by people in northern Asia and Native Americans) and other religions or witchcraft. Her dream was to uncover supreme ancient knowledge, guiding humanity toward spiritual enlightenment. At the time, Lara thought Amanda's ideas were impulsive rather than obsessively fascinating. Their friendship seemed like an abstract philosophical joke, with differing thoughts sparking intellectual debates rather than anger or rage.
During a research trip in Peru, Lara was excavating what she believed to be the tomb of a Tiwanaku queen when her graduate team discovered a new burial chamber, only to meet a tragic end. Lara was the sole survivor to escape back to the surface. Anaya Imanu, the team's structural engineer, listened to Lara recount the terrifying experience of an evil curse causing the massacre, with only Lara and Amanda escaping. Unfortunately, while fleeing together, Amanda became trapped in a confined space as the ceiling collapsed, leading to her drowning.
As players progress through the game, they will discover that Amanda did not die; she escaped and has become Lara's rival, competing for the artifacts Lara seeks. The development team will use Amanda's character to unveil more hidden storylines, hinting that there is much more beneath the surface. The actual gameplay narrative awaits players to uncover step by step.
