First, let's have a review. The most expensive game cartridge in the world before this was a gold edition of '1990 Nintendo World Championships' (NWC) sold in July this year for $17,500. However, at least its shell was gold-plated. The newly-born record-setter, '1991 Nintendo Campus Challenge', didn't even have a shell and yet it sold for a whopping $20,100! This rare treasure is a specially-made NES/Famicom cartridge by Nintendo for the 1991 campus tour gaming competition, which took place in 58 universities across the US with the finals held in Orlando Disney Park. The champion prize was a luxury trip to Florida during next year's finals. This cartridge contained three games: 'Super Mario Bros 3', 'Pinball', and 'Dr. Mario'. Due to its oversized internal circuit board, the shell couldn't fully cover the cartridge, and the upper cover of the NES console had to be removed to insert it. During the competition, the console needed to connect two controllers, pressing the Start button on P2 started timing while P1 played the game. The competition rules required players to eat 50 coins with Mario within six minutes, then score 100,000 points in Pinball, and use the remaining time to play Dr. Mario. The final score is the sum of each game's results multiplied by 10, 1, and 100 respectively. Compared to the 1990 version of 'World Championships', the 'Campus Challenge' is even rarer. In the 1990 World Championship, 26 gold edition cartridges were given out as prizes to champions of various zones and categories. The special cartridges for the 1991 Campus Challenge were originally believed to have been completely destroyed and hadn't surfaced for over a decade. In 2006, this cartridge appeared at an old goods auction of a former Nintendo employee, making it currently the only surviving one. After changing hands several times, it went up for auction again starting on September 28th. Starting from $0.99, after 48 bids, it finally sold for $20,100, setting a new record in the gaming collectibles community! For more exciting content, please click to view.
