Older Brother Suffers from Serious Illness

On the third floor of the inpatient department at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University Medical School, when Wu Chuanjiang, who was suffering from uremia, was wheeled into the operating room, not far from him, another surgery was being carried out with urgency. Lying there was Wu Chuanrong, who was donating a kidney to her older brother.

Worries on the Eve of Surgery

On November 29, 2009, the night before the surgery. Worried that his wife might be afraid before the operation, after delivering dinner to Wu Chuanrong, Jia Jun stayed in the ward for a long time. Wu Chuanrong noticed her husband's anxiety and reassured him: "I'm not afraid. As long as it can extend my brother's life, I'll do anything. The sooner the surgery, the better."

To save her brother's life, sister Wu Chuanrong made a resolute decision: to donate one of her kidneys to her brother to save his life.

Since 2006, Wu Chuanjiang, an employee of the transportation department of Gansu Hualu Aluminum Industry Company in Baiyin, had been feeling dizzy, nauseous, and had lost his appetite. After being examined at a local hospital, he was diagnosed with uremia. Due to the family's financial limitations, Wu Chuanjiang continued with conservative treatment. Wu Chuanjiang's wife told reporters: "On one hand, the surgical costs are exorbitant, and we simply cannot afford them; on the other hand, at the time, Wu Chuanjiang insisted on not undergoing surgery because there wasn't a suitable kidney donor."

Life for Life

The chief doctor informed us that the surgery was very successful. The isolation period would last two weeks. Within these two weeks, anything could happen. Judging by Wu Chuanjiang's urine output, there is no need to worry about the recovery of kidney function; the key is to monitor post-operative complications. Wu Chuanrong's surgery was also successful: as long as she gets through this surgery, she will be able to leave the hospital in a few days.

In May 2009, Wu Chuanjiang's condition suddenly worsened, and even undergoing dialysis twice a week couldn't alleviate his pain. The doctors advised determining a kidney source as soon as possible and performing a kidney transplant surgery; otherwise, his life would be endangered.

Three years ago, Wu Chuanjiang unfortunately contracted uremia, and the originally impoverished family struggled under the weight of this serious illness. Just when his life seemed dimmest, his sister stepped forward – on November 30 of this year, at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University Medical School, despite suffering from ovarian cysts, the sister resolutely donated her kidney to her brother. Currently, the siblings from Baiyin are recovering well post-surgery and are still under observation in the intensive care unit.

Two weeks later, the hospital informed the Wu siblings: the tissue matching was successful.

Mr. Wu said: "The surgery costs over 100,000 yuan, and we have only paid 50,000 yuan so far, with the rest still unaccounted for. But as long as we can save our child's life, there will always be hope."

On November 11, at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University Medical School, a stream of fresh red blood flowed from Wu Chuanrong's arm, and the kidney transplant tissue matching test began. This test, ranging from blood tests to CT scans and urinalysis, was quite detailed.

Subsequently, Wu Chuanjiang was pushed out of the operating room. Still semi-comatose after anesthesia, he weakly pointed with his finger in the direction where his sister was having her surgery.

At 7:30 AM that day, Wu Chuanrong entered the operating room, while Wu Chuanjiang entered at 9:00 AM. Outside the operating room, family members anxiously waited. The surgery lasted nearly seven hours.

Afterward, Wu Chuanrong returned to Baiyin and immediately began handling various procedures, from police station certificates to notarization at the notary office. She completed all the necessary paperwork within just two days. Since Wu Chuanjiang could face life-threatening conditions at any moment, after finishing the procedures, Wu Chuanrong didn’t rest but instead boarded a train to Xi'an overnight.

That night, her brother Wu Chuanjiang in another ward also lay sleepless for a long time. His wife, Lü Xiasha, told reporters: "He was also worried. For his sake, it might ruin his sister's future."

The next morning, as a family member, Jia Jun arrived at the hospital to sign the surgery notification form. The woman who was about to be sent into the operating room was the person he would spend the rest of his life with, yet today, part of her body would forever separate from her. Thinking about this, tears welled up in Jia Jun’s eyes as he signed the paper with trembling hands.

"Where is my brother? Is he alright?" These were the first words Wu Chuanrong spoke after being wheeled out of the operating room.
