Selection and scrapping criteria for steel wire ropes

The selection of traction steel wire rope first requires a sufficient safety factor. Because the traction rope is subjected to various additional stresses during operation, such as the squeezing and bending stress generated when the steel wire rope passes over the traction wheel and guide wheel; the inertial force during the acceleration and deceleration process of the elevator; the influence of uneven load distribution among the steel wire ropes, etc., therefore, a larger safety factor should be taken.

China's elevator safety regulations stipulate: For independent suspension ropes with 3 or more traction drives, the safety factor shall not be less than 12. For traction drives suspended by two steel wires, the safety factor shall not be less than 16. The safety factor refers to the ratio between the minimum breaking load of a steel wire rope and the maximum force exerted on this steel wire rope when an elevator car loaded with its rated load is stopped at the lowest landing. If the car is suspended by two steel wires, then an electrical safety device to prevent slack in the steel wire rope should be installed.

When determining the specifications and number of traction steel wire ropes, in addition to considering the safety factor, it is also necessary to consider the specific pressure of the steel wire rope in the groove. The specific pressure must meet the requirements of the traction specific pressure. From a safety perspective, specifications with larger diameters and more strands should be selected.
