An article in the August 9 Business Week analyzed China's 3G strategy and suggested that China would miss a great many innovation opportunities due to its excessive attention on its own TD-SCDMA standard.

The media disclosed in July that China's two mobile companies had found a novel marketing strategy. In Suchou, East China, China Mobile and China Unicom both distributed local beer by the boxful to attract new users. The Financial Times quoted an analyst as saying that although Mainland China is oligopolized by two giants, the competition between China Mobile and China Unicom was like there were 10 companies competing on the market.
