Recently, Beijing Netcom has started to adopt a "protection mechanism" for ADSL users: "disconnect once after continuous online for 48 hours". Some users questioned this approach, while other users believed the time limit should be shortened to 24 hours.
Users Suddenly Encounter Disconnection
Today, Mr. Wen suddenly found his ADSL disconnected when he was sending and receiving emails. "A similar incident happened a few days ago when I was trading stocks online, it almost caused a big problem," Mr. Wen said.
Afterwards, he learned that it was due to Netcom's mandatory disconnection.
Netcom Claims Many Customers Requested This Feature
According to information from Beijing Netcom, Netcom started adopting this "protection mechanism" last week.
Netcom explained: "This can prevent unexpected losses for users, such as forgetting to disconnect after long-term use of the network, resulting in high internet fees. Additionally, if users install routers with automatic dial-up functions on their own, it could also lead to prolonged internet usage costs. After disconnection, users can reconnect via dial-up software."
Relevant personnel from Beijing Netcom stated that this service was launched at the request of many users. It is understood that for timed-package users, the cost beyond the package is 0.05 yuan per minute, which equals 3 yuan per hour, significantly more expensive than the package rate.
Consumer Attitudes
The reporter randomly interviewed 50 ADSL users, including 8 timed-package users.
Among them, 34 unlimited-timed-package users indicated that this service would have little impact on them.
On the other hand, 10 users believed that the mandatory disconnection might affect normal internet usage. Mr. Wen said, "What if I am about to buy a stock and get forcibly disconnected? Who will be responsible for the loss?" He strongly questioned this "protection" measure.
Moreover, 21 users believed that the mandatory disconnection time should be changed to 24 hours for better results.
Netcom's Explanation
In response to user inquiries, Netcom stated that this issue involves legal, business, and other departments, making it complex and unable to provide an immediate answer at the moment.
However, customer service personnel at Netcom’s 5700 hotline stated that this service aims to ensure the consumption safety of users. They mentioned that no complaints have been received so far and emphasized: "After disconnection, users can reconnect immediately. The time interval is very short and will not affect users' internet experience."
