On the occasion of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, our country has established three major 3G standards --- WCDMA and CDMA2000.

Following the Ministry of Information Industry's announcement of the third generation mobile communication (3G) "Chinese standard" TD-SCDMA as a Chinese telecommunications industry standard on January 20, 2006, on the 16th, the WCDMA proposed by Europe and CDMA2000 proposed by the United States were also announced as Chinese telecommunications industry standards. This means that China's 3G process has made another substantial breakthrough.

After the release of the TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, and CDMA2000 series of telecommunications industry standards, enterprises at home and abroad actively participating in the development, production, and operation of TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, and CDMA2000 products will have a more consistent understanding in aspects such as product demand definition, equipment joint development, system integration applications, etc. The technical and market division of labor will become clearer, and the performance and indicators of similar equipment will increasingly become comparable, thus forming a more mature industrial environment.

In June 2001, the Ministry of Information Industry organized experts from domestic operating companies, equipment manufacturing companies, scientific research support units, and universities to form the "Third Generation Mobile Communication Technology Test Expert Group," officially launching the 3G technology test. Comprehensive testing was conducted on the system equipment, interfaces, network performance, terminals, interoperability, services, wireless interference, network management, billing, and other aspects of the three technologies: TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, and CDMA2000. Six operators and dozens of equipment manufacturers participated, completing thousands of test items with nearly ten thousand engineering and technical personnel involved in the trials and nearly a thousand people participating in the tests.

Simultaneously with the technological experiments, the China Communications Standards Association, following the principle of enterprise-led, market-oriented, fair, impartial, open, and consensus-based standard formulation, guided domestic and international telecommunications manufacturing enterprises, telecommunications operating enterprises, research institutions, and colleges and universities. Based on fully referencing the latest research results of international standardization organizations, after extensive participation and full discussion by domestic and foreign enterprises, they jointly carried out research and formulation work for the TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, and CDMA2000 telecommunications industry standards.

To promote the development of China's 3G industry, the research and formulation work of the TD-SCDMA series telecommunications industry standards was completed first. Subsequently, active efforts were made to conduct research and formulate the WCDMA and CDMA2000 telecommunications industry standards.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Information Industry stated that China's 3G standard research and formulation work was based on evaluation work, passed through the detection and verification of technical experiments, referenced the latest research results of international standardization organizations, widely solicited opinions from all parties, and went through full discussions and strict reviews to complete. However, the speed of international technological development and the speed of mobile communication standard formulation are very fast. After the standard is released, further efforts must continue. According to the latest standard achievements of international standardization organizations, the Chinese 3G industry standards should be continuously supplemented and improved to promote the overall development of 3G.
