During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, there was a monk named Wuxia. He was born in Lugou Bridge, Wanping, Beijing. At the age of 24, he became a monk at Mount Wutai and was given the dharma name Haiyu. Two years later, Master Haiyu walked for seven months from Mount Wutai to Mount Jiuhua in Anhui Province. Master Haiyu lived alone in a cave, eating only wild fruits and valuable medicinal herbs from the mountain. One of these herbs could keep him from feeling hungry for seven days after consuming it once. After eating this herb, Master Haiyu felt full of energy. He pierced his tongue and used his tongue's blood to write the "Flower Garland Sutra". He would write with his blood every 20 days, and it took him 38 years to complete 81 volumes of the "Blood Sutra".
