FreeRice is a vocabulary game website where users earn a certain amount of free rice by correctly answering the definitions of words provided on the site. The real rice is donated to hungry people around the world through the United Nations World Food Programme.
According to statistics from the United Nations World Food Programme, approximately 800 million people worldwide still suffer from hunger every day. Now each of us has the opportunity to help them by simply answering the meanings of a few English words on the FreeRice website.
FreeRice displays a word each time and lists four options explaining the meaning of the word. Users just need to click on what they believe is the correct option. For every word answered correctly, you can earn ten grains of rice; the more correct answers, the more free rice is raised, and FreeRice will donate this rice to the United Nations World Food Programme.
By June 8, 2009, FreeRice had donated a total of about 65,307,231,570 grains of rice. For detailed statistics, please see here. (If the FreeRice website takes longer to load, please wait a bit longer.)
