On November 11, Tencent Corporation chose to celebrate its "tenth anniversary" by releasing the *Tencent Corporate Citizenship and Social Responsibility Report*.

This report systematically outlines the practices and reflections of Tencent's growth from China's largest Internet company into an outstanding "corporate citizen." As China's first truly meaningful corporate social responsibility (CSR) report in the Internet industry, the publication of this report also signifies that the relatively young Internet sector in our country has entered a "mature phase" of actively practicing social responsibility.

In this CSR report, which consists of five chapters, Tencent focuses on five key areas: independent intellectual property rights innovation, promoting the healthy development of the Internet, creating social value, employee and user care, and public welfare endeavors. It meticulously documents the social responsibilities fulfilled by Tencent over the past decade towards society, the industry, and its users. Moreover, it provides for the first time a detailed disclosure to the public of Tencent's positive experiences in employee training, cultural development, internal management, and information security assurance.

Independent Intellectual Property Rights

In the field of independent innovation, which is at the core of our country's strategy to build an innovative nation, the Tencent Corporate Social Responsibility Report shows that by the second quarter of 2008, Tencent had filed a total of 1,645 domestic and international patent applications, surpassing the combined total of all other Chinese Internet companies' patent applications. This robust innovation capability has kept Tencent at the forefront of industry development. Within the company, Tencent invested over 100 million yuan to establish the first research institute in China’s Internet industry — Tencent Research Institute — which works alongside the Tencent Innovation Center to focus on research in six core foundational technologies of the Internet: storage technology, data mining, multimedia, Chinese language processing, distributed networks, and information security, as well as innovative applications for the next 3-5 years. Externally, Tencent established the "Tencent Innovation Club," primarily targeting college students, in 15 universities across the country, fully engaging higher education institutions and college students in corporate innovation. To date, more than 60,000 people have directly participated. Meanwhile, Tencent acquired several Internet technology research companies in countries such as the United States and South Korea, leveraging external expertise to expand its innovation capabilities and laying an international foundation for Tencent's innovative development.
