In 1949, the National Wheelchair Basketball Association was established in the U.S. Wheelchair basketball became an officially organized competitive sport. Since then, the sport has rapidly developed worldwide and is currently practiced in over 80 countries and regions. From the 1st Rome Paralympics in 1960 to the present, wheelchair basketball has always been an official event at the Paralympic Games.
