The Origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of China's traditional holidays. According to historical records, the term "Mid-Autumn" first appeared in the book *Rites of Zhou*. By the Wei and Jin Dynasties, there were records such as "the Governor of Niuxiao was instructed to celebrate on the Mid-Autumn evening by casually boating on the river with his entourage." It wasn't until the early Tang Dynasty that the Mid-Autumn Festival became a fixed holiday. The *Old Book of Tang* (*Records of Emperor Taizong*) mentions "the 15th day of the eighth lunar month as the Mid-Autumn Festival." The festival gained popularity starting from the Song Dynasty, and by the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it had become as famous as New Year’s Day (now known as Spring Festival), becoming one of China's main festivals. This festival is also the second-largest traditional festival in China after the Spring Festival.
