HGST, Hitachi's storage technology company, today released the world's first 3.5-inch desktop hard drive with a single-disk capacity of 375GB. The model is Deskstar 7K1000.B and it is scheduled to be shipped within this month. The maximum capacity of Deskstar 7K1000.B remains at 1TB. However, the 375GB single-disk capacity allows it to achieve 1TB capacity using only three platters, whereas the previous generation Deskstar 7K1000 used five platters with a single-disk capacity of 200GB. In terms of final results, Hitachi's 375GB single disk achieves the same 3-platter 1TB hard drive as Western Digital and Samsung's 333/334GB single disks. However, the storage density of the 375GB single disk reaches 270Gbit per square inch, providing greater redundancy space in the manufacturing process, improving yield rates, and ensuring better quality.
