[IT Expert Network Exclusive] On July 8, 2008, Beijing - Recently, China's first petaflop supercomputer, Sugon 5000A, was officially launched. In this major scientific research project in the field of high-performance computing in China, AMD, a global leading provider of computing solutions, used its advanced technology and many experiences in high-performance computing. After collaborating on Sugon 4000A, AMD once again joined hands with Sugon Group to further promote the independent development of China’s petaflop supercomputer to a new level and pushed China back into the forefront of international high-performance computing.

The upcoming Sugon 5000A at the Shanghai Supercomputing Center will use nearly 7000 low-power AMD Opteron quad-core processors "Barcelona", with an ultra-strong computing power exceeding 200 trillion calculations per second. Following the domestic high-performance computing record of 11 trillion calculations per second set by Sugon 4000A in 2004, it has once again achieved brilliance.

New Power Comes from "Core" Power

As the computational core, the CPU used in Sugon 5000A, AMD Opteron quad-core processor "Barcelona", has an advanced architecture with the characteristics of low power consumption, high performance, excellent virtualization, and investment protection. It has outstanding advantages in high-performance computing applications. Sugon 5000A supercomputer has made significant breakthroughs with features such as full autonomy, high performance, high efficiency, high density, and low power consumption, any one of which is at the international leading level.

1. High Performance - Exceeding 200 Trillion Calculations Per Second Ultra-High Computational Performance

The floating-point processing capability of Sugon 5000A supercomputer will exceed 200 trillion calculations per second, with a Linpack value expected to reach 160T. This speed will allow China's high-performance computers to challenge the world's top ten again.

2. High Efficiency - Ensuring Wide Application

The system efficiency of Sugon 5000A will reach more than 70%, which is also worth mentioning about Sugon 5000A. Additionally, each computing node (blade) consists of four quad-core processors for a total of 16 cores with a memory capacity of 64GB; each fat node consists of eight quad-core processors for a total of 32 cores with a memory capacity of 128GB. At the same time, multi-path parallel computing within a single node has been realized, all these industry-leading technologies ensure the ultra-high computational efficiency of Sugon 5000A. Sugon 5000A will use WCCS and Linux among other general operating systems to ensure wide application.

3. High Density - 160 Cores in One “Body”

The delivered Sugon 5000A supercomputer uses four-way blade systems and eight-way fat nodes as computing nodes, adopting an industry-rare design with 40 CPUs and 160 cores per cabinet, and advanced network switching modules. These designs make Sugon 5000A one of the highest-density high-performance computers in the industry.

4. Low Power Consumption - Peak Over 200 Trillion Calculations Per Second, Power Only 700KW

The delivered Sugon 5000A adopts a large number of advanced technologies. In hardware, it uses low-power AMD quad-core Opteron processors "Barcelona" and advanced water-cooling cooling systems, while in software, it uses Sugon's self-developed Grid View management system, which can reduce the power consumption of Sugon 5000A by more than 20%. The final result is that the power consumption of Sugon 5000A, the king of computing, is controlled within 700KW when fully loaded, and the air conditioning system in the computer room does not have to bear more burden, making a good contribution to our country's construction of a resource-conserving society.

Wise Choice Originates from Technological Leadership

Sugon and AMD have a long history of cooperation in the field of high-performance computing. In 2004, AMD successfully cooperated with Sugon to develop the supercomputer Sugon 4000A based on AMD Opteron processors, with a peak computing speed of 10 trillion times per second. Its computing speed ranked first in China and tenth in the world, making China the third country after the United States and Japan to own a 10 trillion times computer, establishing Sugon's leadership image in the high-end computing field.

The cornerstone of their long-term cooperation is AMD's leading advantage in the field of high-performance computing. In the latest list of the world's top 500 supercomputers released on June 18, 2008, IBM's "Roadrunner" supercomputer greatly surpassed "Blue Gene" to become the champion of the list, including 6948 AMD Opteron processors.

In addition to helping the world's first supercomputer achieve record-breaking performance at the petascale level, six supercomputers based on AMD multi-core Opteron processors are listed in the top 20 of the top 500, including the much-anticipated Sun's "Ranger" system at the Texas Advanced Computing Center and several famous Cray HPC systems.

"Rooted in China, Winning the Future Together"

Since entering China, AMD has adhered to the unique strategy of "rooting in China and winning the future together" to coexist with China. Through in-depth and extensive cooperation with the Chinese government and partners represented by Sugon, AMD fulfills its commitment to rooting in China.

The development level of supercomputers is an important indicator to measure a country's comprehensive national strength and international competitiveness, and is a comprehensive reflection of a country's scientific and technological strength. In the past few years, AMD has continuously helped Sugon promote the development of China in the field of high-performance computing. In 2004, AMD worked with Sugon Group to launch the high-performance computer Sugon 4000A, ranking among the top 500 global high-performance computers that year, ranking in the top ten, making China's supercomputer enter the global top 10 for the first time, and making China the third country after the United States and Japan to own a computer exceeding 10 trillion times, marking a big step forward for China's high-performance computing industry, meeting the needs of China in the field of high-performance computing at the time. But with the development of technology and the increase in demand, supercomputers around the world gradually entered the petaflop computing level. This time, AMD and Sugon teamed up again to launch the Sugon 5000A supercomputer with computing power exceeding 200 trillion times, pushing China's supercomputing back to the forefront of the world.

As a leader in many technologies in the global semiconductor industry, AMD's assistance to Sugon to achieve another leap in China's high-performance computing not only further promotes the independent innovation process of China's high-tech but also demonstrates AMD's adherence to its long-term development strategy of "rooting in China and winning the future together".
