"The Sugar Lab" has taken 3D printing to a new level. Artists Liz and Kyle von Hasseln, with backgrounds in architectural design, are bringing 3D printing technology into the realm of high-end pastry making. Using the latest technology, they enable the digital design and realization of sugar decorations on cakes.
"In the actual printing process, if you've ever handled powdered sugar, you know it can absorb moisture and harden overnight," which is the principle that allows sugar to be used as a 3D printing material. They mix sugar with water and alcohol, carefully and intelligently screening for the right humidity and hardness in the sugar material. The printing process is similar to traditional 3D printing; they have simply optimized it for sugar, improving the print resolution and the strength of the sugar.
Two years ago, at the time of their graduation, the founders of "The Sugar Lab" began this experiment. Initially, they just wanted to use 3D printing technology to make a birthday cake for a close friend.
