Last week, due to a disk failure in Sun Microsystems' server, the US Federal Aviation Administration's NOTAM data system was down for nearly 20 hours. The NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) system is used to issue notifications to pilots regarding airports, equipment, and safety issues. The system went down on May 22nd and was restored at 7 PM on May 23rd. Barry Davis, the manager of aviation information management at the Federal Aviation Administration, said that due to the disk failure, information had to be communicated through local air traffic controllers and backup systems, including websites used to disseminate the latest information. He also stated that flight safety was absolutely guaranteed.
