Fire in Kangley Village rental apartment leaves one injured
New Express - Trainee reporter Zhang Ruoran
Happy New Year, but be cautious of fire hazards. At around 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon, a fire broke out on the third floor of a rental apartment within Kangley Dawei courtyard at Lujiang West Street in Haizhu District. The flames were intense. After an hour-long rescue operation, the fire was finally extinguished. One middle-aged man was injured in the incident.
Neighboring residents fled the scene
At around 5 p.m. yesterday afternoon, I observed at Lujiang West Street that five fire trucks were lined up in a row. Firefighters were busily connecting water pipes to the fire trucks. Near the entrance of an alley beside Guangzhou No.94 Middle School, many residents stood outside the cordon line looking into the alley. A long water pipe extended from the fire truck deep into the alley, with firefighters occasionally walking out to adjust the pipes.
A witness, Mr. Wu who lives nearby, told reporters that at around 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon, he noticed small flames emerging from the third floor of a white building inside Kangley Dawei courtyard, prompting him to immediately call the emergency services. "At first, the fire wasn't large, but the flames were visible. Not long after, the fire grew significantly. From the outside, you could see a large red tongue of flame protruding outward, and the smoke was very thick. I ran away because I feared danger." Mr. Wu said that as the fire intensified, thick smoke began to emerge from the balcony of the burning floor, causing many neighboring residents to flee from the building. "The smoke could be seen from far away, it seemed as high as a 20-story building."
Narrow alleys hindered fire truck access
Upon arriving at the scene, the firefighters discovered that the alley leading to the burning building was too narrow for the fire trucks to pass through. They had no choice but to connect several dozen water pipes together to extinguish the fire source, while medical personnel walked into the scene to carry the injured person out. According to nearby residents, a middle-aged man was injured, his face and body covered in soot, "The injuries weren't severe; he was carried out on a stretcher and loaded onto an ambulance."
After more than an hour of rescue operations, by approximately 5:50 p.m. yesterday, the fire was completely extinguished. The police lifted the cordon at the alley entrance, allowing some residents who went out to buy groceries to return home. However, the police still cordoned off the area near the burning building and entered the scene for investigation.
According to neighbors near the incident site, the burning building was a rental apartment, typically rented by workers from nearby clothing factories. "Since it's the Spring Festival period, most tenants have returned home for the holiday, leaving only a few workers still residing there." Neighbors speculated that the cause of the fire was due to a short circuit in the wiring.
