A Girl from Jingjiang Suffers from Leukemia, Her Life Hangs in the Balance
Reading Tip: A girl from Jingjiang suffers from leukemia and her life is hanging by a thread. The previously arranged bone marrow donor suddenly backs out. In this critical moment, the hospital suggests that the mother donates her bone marrow. Although it's not a perfect match, the mother, Zhan Xiuying, says "as long as there's a glimmer of hope, I'm willing to trade my life for hers."
Unexpectedly
At around 11 a.m. on April 4, when I contacted Jiang Jing's mother, Zhan Xiuying, she was on her way to deliver lunch to her daughter. To take care of her only daughter, she rented a house near the First People's Hospital of Suzhou. On February 24, Jiang Jing entered the sterile chamber and gradually started taking medicine that would destroy her own hematopoietic stem cell system; she couldn't eat greasy foods. That noon, Zhan Xiuying prepared stir-fried green beans and winter melon soup.
"Winter melon soup, she likes it," Zhan Xiuying spoke softly, trying hard to hide her sorrow. After more than 20 minutes, she arrived at the sterile room outside the hospital. Through the thick glass wall, Jiang Jing was seen happily eating the meal her mother had made.
Jiang Jing always told her mother that she was luckier than someone who won 5 million yuan in the lottery.
Before the donor backed out, Jiang Jing was really lucky. Last March, she was diagnosed with leukemia; in November, a matching stem cell donor was found; in February this year, preoperative examinations were proceeding smoothly, and 600,000 yuan in handling fees had been deposited into the hospital account.
At around 10 a.m. on March 1, Zhan Xiuying received a call from the hospital asking her to come over. She rushed there, leaving the half-washed greens behind. The doctor informed her that something terrible had happened — the donor suddenly refused to donate.
Zhan Xiuying recalled the situation then, feeling as if "the sky had collapsed."
"The medicine has all been administered, the transplant is scheduled for the 6th, what should we do now?" Zhan Xiuying pleaded with the doctor to help, otherwise her daughter, who has no immunity at all, would have no choice but to wait for death.
"Mom, please save me." When Jiang Jing learned that the donor had changed their mind halfway through, she felt like a person falling into a well, being pulled up by a rope from the dark bottom of the well just before seeing the light, when suddenly, the rope broke, and she fell back into the terrifying deep well.
Final Effort
The one who threw this "rope of hope" to Jiang Jing was a female college student from Shanghai. It was a weekend on March 4, so the reporter was unable to get in touch with the staff of the Shanghai Red Cross Society.
Jiang Jing's boyfriend, Zhang Wei, said that the matter of contacting the volunteer had always been handled by the hospital. He currently learned that the female college student herself did not explicitly refuse to donate, but the resistance came from her parents. They originally thought donating hematopoietic stem cells was like donating blood, where you could leave after donating, but later they heard that after donating blood, hospital observation might be required, thus becoming "hesitant" and backing down.
It was understood that Jiang Jing's cousin and sister-in-law actively contacted the Red Cross Society, and the staff expressed regret, saying they would make every effort to persuade the girl's parents.
"The final result should be out by the 5th," Zhang Wei worriedly said. He is from Chongqing and works at the same financial institution as Jiang Jing. Just a month after they confirmed their relationship, Jiang Jing was diagnosed with the disease.
"In the vast sea of people, I met her, and we walked together. At the time when she needs support the most, I shouldn't leave her," he rejected his parents' advice to let go.
Zhang Wei said he had posted a Weibo request asking kind-hearted people to help convince the female college student, and at the same time prayed that she saw this Weibo post and would change her mind. "This is the only thing I can do for my girlfriend," he said.
No Retreat
Zhan Xiuying said that the hospital also encouraged them not to give up until the last moment. However, to prevent any "what-ifs," the hospital had no choice but to prepare a second plan, letting Zhan Xiuying donate her bone marrow to her daughter. But Zhan Xiuying's blood type data does not fully match her daughter. Generally, an appropriate bone marrow match should have six consistent points, but she and her daughter only have three consistent points.
"I am her mother, I cannot watch her die without doing anything. As long as there is a glimmer of hope, I am willing to trade my life for hers," Zhan Xiuying held back tears, but sobs could still be heard from the other end of the phone.
Fu Hong, the director of the Hematology Department at the First People's Hospital of Suzhou, said that although Zhan Xiuying is not the best donor, the hospital has performed multiple transplants with such three-point matches, all of which were successful.
I learned that Zhan Xiuying was supposed to stay in the hospital for rest that day, but she slipped out to cook for her daughter because she was worried that her daughter wouldn't have tasty meals.
