Haval is positioned by Great Wall Motors as a CUV model (City Utility Vehicle). In Chinese, this refers to a multi-functional urban vehicle, also known as a Crossover. In English, Haval means "free roaming." It is the first independently developed model of Great Wall Motors and initially achieved an SUV legend upon its release. Despite being surrounded by numerous joint-venture brands, it has maintained the top sales position up until now.
In terms of appearance, Haval lacks the ruggedness of Great Wall's previous products. The body lines transition naturally, making the overall style much softer. The bodywork craftsmanship has improved significantly, with seams on the doors and engine hood becoming much smaller. The front face is one of the more distinctive aspects of Haval's appearance; the diamond-shaped headlights combined with the grille and bumper design are quite prominent. Notably, although it is an SUV, Haval's fuel consumption surprises many people. Diesel models, especially those with the 2.5TCI engine, according to most owners, consume only 7 liters per 100 kilometers in actual use. Some long-term owners have even achieved a fuel consumption of 4 liters per 100 kilometers in fuel-saving competitions. Gasoline models, mainly the 4G69 Haval, consume approximately 10 liters per 100 kilometers. Recently, the diesel 2.5TCI Haval has been particularly popular. Thanks to the high-tech engine jointly developed with Bosch of Germany, fuel consumption has dropped significantly, and noise levels are comparable to gasoline vehicles. Therefore, the prospects for this car are very promising.
The overall performance of Haval has comprehensively surpassed all previous products of Great Wall Motors and should be considered as their transformation piece. It is evident that the manufacturer has begun shifting its strategic focus, gradually moving towards mid-to-high-end product series.
In 2009, Great Wall Motors re-planned its SUV products. According to the plan, Haval will be divided into three main categories: small, medium, and high-end. The medium-sized Haval will be the M series, the medium Haval will be the H series, and the high-end Haval will be the S series. This reorganization has greatly promoted the brand focus and market sales of Haval. At Great Wall's 2010 marketing conference, Haval was highlighted as the mainstay product, aiming to secure the national sales champion title in the SUV category.
On December 20, 2011, the 600,000th Haval was officially delivered.
