Ms. Bai, who lives in Qingdao, Shandong, reported that among the two bags of "insect eggs" she bought from the supermarket, one egg had a red egg white. In the afternoon of March 4th, a reporter contacted the manufacturer of the eggs, and a responsible person surnamed Zhang said: "If only one or two eggs have this problem, then it must be a special case, because the hens are on their menstrual period." Dr. Ji Haifeng, an expert in animal husbandry at China Agricultural University, said that there could be two reasons for the blood-colored egg white: one is that the hens were infected with E. coli which caused severe inflammation of the oviduct, and the other is that problematic feed was added during the breeding process. Ji Haifeng said that hens do not have menstrual periods, and so-called "insect eggs" could not possibly be fed entirely on insects during the breeding process; it is only possible that insect components were added to the feed. It is recommended that citizens do not consume eggs with bloody egg whites.
