China News Service, Yichang, January 11th (Guo Xiaoying, Gong Yu) - On January 11th, the Xiling District Court of Yichang City, Hubei Province, introduced to reporters a thought-provoking divorce case: the son's gambling addiction and abandonment of his family left the righteous father-in-law to step in and handle the divorce procedures for his daughter-in-law on behalf of his son.
According to the court, two years ago, the defendant Xiao Zhang became obsessed with gambling. He borrowed money from all sides to fund his gambling habit, often spoke harshly to his wife Xiao Chu, and showed indifference towards their child. Eventually, Xiao Zhang abandoned his family altogether. After a fruitless year-long search, Xiao Chu decided to end this marriage and start a new life. Upon learning of his daughter-in-law's intentions, Mr. Zhang, who is over sixty years old, expressed respect for her decision and accompanied Xiao Chu to the court to file for divorce, even helping her draft the complaint.
Since one of the divorce parties did not appear, according to legal procedures, it was necessary to publicly announce the delivery of the civil complaint and summons for trial. Mr. Zhang believed that these were troubles caused by his own son, so he voluntarily covered the costs associated with the public announcement.
Regarding the divorce case between Xiao Chu and Xiao Zhang, the court legally made a first-instance judgment granting the divorce between Xiao Chu and Xiao Zhang, awarding custody of their child to the mother, Xiao Chu. A case that could have been complicated was swiftly resolved.
During the period of Xiao Chu's divorce proceedings, Mr. Zhang also made a commitment: he would regularly set aside part of his salary income to provide economic assistance to Xiao Chu.
The judge remarked that this special divorce case offers much reflection: after forming a family, as a husband and as a father, one should bravely take up the responsibilities on their shoulders. Such tragedies should not be allowed to repeat themselves, leaving behind broken families.
