On the morning of Valentine's Day, 31-year-old Sun Wei died in the bed of Longhua Hospital, and his murderer was his own father. This 178 cm tall Henan man, a veteran soldier, was diagnosed as a vegetative person after being stabbed by his father. Six months later, he was pronounced dead. On the night of August 29th last year, after an argument with his drunken father who had come home, Sun Wei was admitted to the hospital after being stabbed twice by his father. Currently, the police have begun arresting Sun Wei's father, Sun. However, Sun Wei's mother and several brothers are still unable to let go of their hatred for Sun. Psychological experts stated that Sun's behavior should bear legal responsibility. However, if Sun is already a mentally unhealthy patient, they urge the family to put down their hatred and forgive the murderer, stepping out of the shadow.

"How could he be so cruel? A tiger doesn't eat its own cubs," said Sun Wei's third brother, his voice trembling. He and his siblings still cannot understand or forgive what their father did.

This tragedy has torn the family apart.

Sun Wei's third brother said that there were five brothers in the Sun family. Sun Wei was the eldest and also the most successful one. He joined the army in Beijing at an early age and worked in his hometown after retiring from the military. Soon after, he went to work in Shenzhen. Before the incident, Sun Wei and his girlfriend Liu operated a fruit stall behind the You Song Police Station in Longhua. The business was stable, and his girlfriend was pregnant. They had chosen a date to get their marriage certificate, everything seemed hopeful. But misfortune struck just a few days before the registration date.

Because the second son had already married and started a family, the elderly couple came to Shenzhen and lived with their eldest son Sun Wei. Sun Wei's third brother said, "At that time (just after admission), when the doctor asked my brother where he was from and his name, he could still answer. But a few days later, it was impossible." Sun Wei's third brother said that a few days later, the doctor informed them that his older brother had become a vegetative person.

On the day Sun Wei was admitted, he was found to have been deeply stabbed in the abdomen and left upper arm, causing severe blood loss. No one knows why the conflict happened that night, nor do they want to recall it. Sun Wei's fiancée Liu stayed with him in the hospital for two months while she was pregnant and then left quietly. The family said that Liu had an abortion on her three-month pregnancy. And the 60-year-old father Sun, disappeared from home the day after the incident, and his whereabouts are still unknown.

The sons reported the incident and demanded the arrest of their father.

In the afternoon yesterday, outside a rental house in You Song, Longhua, Sun Wei's four brothers took out photos of their brother in the army. In the photo, Sun Wei is wearing a military uniform, looking very spirited. The younger brothers said that in December 1997, during his second year of conscription, a younger brother and their mother Ms. Liao took a train to visit Sun Wei at a certain military camp in Beijing, leaving this group photo.

"We reported it to the police that day and asked them to take him (our father) away, but the police didn't arrest him, saying it was a family matter," Sun's younger brothers said emotionally, believing that their father should be punished by law. However, on the night of the incident, after being taken to the police station for investigation, Sun's father was not criminally detained. Sun Wei's third brother said that the police station considered it a domestic dispute and did not investigate further.

However, the police did not abandon their pursuit of Sun Wei's father Sun. Bao'an police said last night that after learning that Sun Wei, who was injured by Sun, had recently died, the police had decided to arrest Sun Wei's father Sun. They have now investigated and locked down the location of suspect Sun, preparing to capture him.

The father has a long history of alcoholism and domestic violence.

Why did Sun Wei's father, Sun, hurt his son so severely? It is currently unknown, but Sun's long-term alcoholism and history of domestic violence are nightmares that his wife and five sons cannot forget.

Ms. Liao, 53 years old, squatted by the roadside and cried continuously. When talking about her husband Sun, she pulled down her collar to show the scars on her chest. "It was all because of the alcohol that ruined our family. He (my husband) completely changes when he drinks, his brain is ruined by alcohol. He used to beat me like this, and the next day he wouldn't remember anything," Ms. Liao said that her husband began drinking heavily around the age of 40, and his personality changed drastically since then. But when he wasn't drunk, everything was normal, "he was just a good person."

Not only Ms. Liao, but all five sons suffered from their father's alcoholism. The youngest brother in the family said that the brothers abandoned their studies and went out to work early just to escape their father.

Ms. Liao, 53 years old, still lives with her sons. She dares not say a good word about her husband in front of the children. Her husband left her with only one sentence before he left: "I'm gone, you don't need to care whether I'm alive or dead."

■ Lawyer's Opinion

Alcoholism is not an excuse for crime

"Alcoholism should not be an excuse for hurting others," said lawyer Zhong Yongjun from Guangdong Guohui Law Firm. The law exempts only mental patients when determining intentional injury or murder. All other people with full civil capacity bear the same responsibility. "If law enforcement chooses to give in to these people, it actually encourages some individuals to cause trouble under the influence of alcohol and promotes illegal behavior among alcoholics." Zhong also said that in previous cases of alcohol-related injuries, they were defined as intentional injury. However, the court may impose slightly lighter penalties depending on the degree of intoxication, but it does not affect the determination of intentional injury.
