The picture shows Ms. Lin sitting by her son's sickbed Wenchang, November 2nd (reported and photographed by journalist Lin Wenquan) - Recently, Ms. Lin from Wenshan Village, Xixi Village Committee, Wengjiao Town, Wenchang City, was diagnosed with a uterine tumor at the hospital. However, she insisted on not seeking treatment and continued to work odd jobs daily. She said, "It doesn't matter if I die, but I must save money for my son's uremia and rhinitis treatments."
It is reported that Ms. Lin's son is named Lin Song and he is already 23 years old. Four years ago, he was diagnosed with uremia. The treatment costs over the past few years have amounted to nearly one million yuan. Although the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme covered 50%, the remaining 500,000 yuan has left this rural family destitute. On October 30th, Lin Song's condition worsened, and he went into shock upon being admitted to the hospital. After emergency treatment, he regained consciousness, but the medical bills are piling up.
After four years of treatment, there is no more money to borrow
On the 2nd, our reporter visited Lin Song lying in bed at the People's Hospital of Wenchang City. His skin was deep purple, his mouth opened as if he wanted to speak but couldn't. He kept rolling slowly in bed. According to the doctor on duty, Lin Song's body cannot eliminate toxins due to uremia, which is why his skin is deep purple. Currently, his condition is under basic control, but he still needs to be hospitalized for treatment.
Ms. Lin kept touching her son's head, tears streaming down her face, saying, "I know how painful this disease is. If only I could suffer in place of my son." Ms. Lin recalled that four years ago, her 19-year-old son was working in Haikou when he suddenly called home, saying he wasn't feeling well. Treatment at the hospital was ineffective, so she asked him to return to Wenchang People's Hospital for an examination because it was cheaper than going to the provincial hospital.
The diagnosis from Wenchang People's Hospital plunged Ms. Lin's rural family into despair. Her son had uremia, a disease that is very difficult to cure. It can only be alleviated through hemodialysis or by finding a matching kidney to prolong life.
Ms. Lin stated that since her son was diagnosed with uremia, he had to undergo hemodialysis three times a week at Hainan Kenong General Hospital. Each session cost 500 yuan, amounting to over 7,000 yuan per month in treatment fees. In the four years since then, they have spent nearly one million yuan. Fortunately, the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme covered 50%, but the remaining 500,000 yuan in medical expenses was beyond what their rural family could afford. Most of the money for treatment was borrowed from relatives and friends, and now no one is willing to lend them any more money.
To save her son, the mother works despite her illness
It is understood that besides Lin Song's parents, there is also a 72-year-old paralyzed grandmother in the family. The main source of income comes from growing rice, peanuts, coconuts, etc., with an annual income of less than 10,000 yuan. We learned that since Lin Song fell into a coma and was hospitalized, Ms. Lin has been running back and forth between the hospital and home. At around 6:30 in the morning, she would rush home from the hospital to bathe and feed the paralyzed elder, then quickly take a bus to the hospital to take care of her son. Lin Song's father, Mr. Lin, spends all day taking care of their son in the hospital.
"To treat my son, I'll do any kind of work," Ms. Lin firmly said. It is known that Lin Song's father, Mr. Lin, usually takes care of the elderly and their son at home, while Ms. Lin goes out to work and earn money. Normally, Ms. Lin works on construction sites mixing mortar, earning several dozen yuan a day.
According to Ms. Lin, last year she felt unwell and went to the hospital for a check-up, where she found out she had a tumor in her uterus. Her family urged her to seek treatment immediately, but she refused outright. "If I use the money at home to treat myself, where will the money come from to treat my son's illness?" Ms. Lin cried.
Our reporter interviewed Lin Song's attending physician, Dr. Fu, who explained that apart from a kidney transplant, Lin Song's uremia cannot be cured. A kidney transplant alone would cost at least 400,000 yuan. Currently, Lin Song's condition in the hospital is basically stable, but his condition is already severe and requires continued hospitalization for treatment.
Hearing the doctor's words, Lin Song's mother couldn't hold back her sobs, "We can't even afford the medical bills anymore, let alone find 400,000 yuan for treatment. My son is still so young, what will happen next?"
Faced with the enormous treatment costs for Lin Song, this rural family is almost collapsing.
